Grandpa Bunny Bunny and Heaven, Rain and Rainbows

13959623 Lizard head When I was a little girl, my Mother used to load my brothers and sisters and me up in our red and white 1958 Chevy station wagon – I think it was on Fridays – and we’d make the exciting journey to the big, modern Safeway supermarket on South Colorado Boulevard in Denver. It was always a big event because the refrigerator would go from empty to full, and in summer we’d come home with bags of fresh peaches, watermelon, strawberries and bing cherries – yum!

But, perhaps even more exciting than the groceries, we were also allowed to pick out a new Golden Book from the children’s section of the store, and that meant opening new doors in the fascinating worlds of information and imagination. Those glistening golden bindings just shimmered with anticipation.

One of my favorites was entitled Grandpa Bunny Bunny. It was a sweet tale of a Grandpa rabbit who taught the little bunnies about the magic of nature and prepared them for life in Earth’s changing seasons. He was a supreme storyteller and magnificent artist. He showed them compassion and love, patience and grace. They came to depend on his direction and guidance, and when the day came that Grandpa Bunny Bunny was no longer in his hole, when he had passed on, the little bunnies were lost in their sadness and grief.

Bisoncalf2 Hwr2 High Wire Ranch is one of about 40 vendors who travel up to a 100 miles to sell their products every Friday, June – October, 10:30a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Telluride Farmers' Market.

High Wire is located 53 miles southeast of Grand Junction on Redlands Mesa, where owners Dave and Sue Whittlesey oversee a head of over 200 bison and elk.

Eating Well magazine featured High Wire Ranch in its March/April 2007. Sunset covered the ranch in its February 2008 issue, as did a PBS series on America's heartland.  (The article and video is available online at the America's Heartland website.)

Fashion Friday: Plaids and gingham for summer

[click "Play" for Kristin's take on plaids and ginghams for summer]

IMG_0665  Why? According to Telluride Inside and Out's fashion expert Kristin Holbrook of Two Skirts, the answer is simple: the updated classics are fun and great with jeans.

IMG_0674  Worn alone, gingham might say "Mad Men" and retro 50s glamour. Plaid alone might be a nostalgic nod to farmers, very hip in light of the fact returning to the land has become a go-to career choice for many young people today and Carhartts, the new suit and tie. However, today's plaids are not just for button-down shirts. There are dresses, swimsuits, and romantic tops., plus handbags, scarves, even shoes.

For who is doing what with ginghams and plaids and ways to wear the look, click the "play" button and listen to Kristin's podcast.

No rainbows without rain

IMG_4150 IMG_4154 My office window looks east, toward Telluride and the end of the upper San Miguel canyon. Cynthia Zehm photographs beautiful sunsets and storms over the La Sal range. I get sunrises and afternoon rainbows and alpenglow. I believe we are both lucky. This rainbow was shot out of my bedroom window at 7:20 pm, July 30, 2009. I didn't rush out to find the pot of gold. I found Telluride in the autumn of 1985, and that has been my pot of gold. I found a second cache in New York City in 1989. How lucky can one man be?

Nuggets from the Nugget: "The Hangover" and "Transformers"

Hangover Transformersrevengeofthefallen_teaser2 The Nugget Theatre in Telluride will show "The Hangover" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" for the week of Friday, July 31- Thursday, August 6.

"The Hangover" is a Vegas bachelor party with a missing groom, a baby in a closet, etc. Rated R for the usual reasons. Go for entertainment, not the message.

My grandkids introduced me to Transformers years ago. But they had to manipulate the robots to change them into their various permutations. In "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" the transitions happen in real time. Expect to see a lot of twisted metal as robots war against robots. Your kids can explain it all to you. Rated PG for violence, sexual situations and language.

See the Nugget website for trailers and reviews. Showtimes are listed below.

Big green plans for the Telluride region from TNCC

With the assistance of Telluride's The New Community Coalition and April Montgomery of the Telluride Foundation,  San Miguel County sent off a large grant request to the EPA on Tuesday for their Climate Showcase Community grant.

The grants are for communities to apply for funds up to $500,000 to assist local and tribal governments in developing plans, conducting demonstrations, and implementing projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while achieving additional environmental, economic, public health, and/or community benefits. The overall goal of the Climate Showcase Communities program is to create replicable models of sustainable community action that generate cost-effective and persistent greenhouse gas reductions while improving the environmental, economic, public health, or social conditions in a community.

Some of the highlights  included in the grant are the purchase and use of Eco-Audit software that helps individual households track and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Funding for greening government and public buildings

If successful this grant would be a huge boost to our regional efforts at sustainability. Please send your good vibes out for a positive outcome for this application!

Other projects covered by the grant include solar hot water for town park showers and swimming pool, energy saving technology for the hockey rink, additional funding for Telluride Townies bike lending program and two feasibility studies - one for energy efficient public transportation and another to study the forest carbon equations in our region as well as biomass energy potentials.
