Telluride Inside... and Out, Red Grooms and Stephen Wald

Grooms, 2009, Dancing, Marlborough Chelsea (1) Telluride Inside... and Out's stories about our very memorable day in Chelsea continue with a recap of our visit to the Marlborough Chelsea Gallery, 545 West 25th Street, to see an exhibit of monumental sculptures by Red Grooms. Why we went has everything to do with jonesing for the child-like wonder of the artist's work, cosmic connections, Telluride, and our dear friend Stephen Wald.

Grooms, 2009, Dancing, Marlborough Chelsea (4) Stephen Wald died that very same Thursday, October 22, after a long battle against Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. I suspect his passing happened close to the time a group of us went to the Marlborough to celebrate our friend, a successful businessman, philanthropist, accomplished athlete, photographer, and art lover/collector, because Clint and I knew Red Grooms held a special place in Stephen's life: specifically by a window in the entry hall of the elegant Aldasoro home he shared with his beloved wife Sheila, also a collector.

Looks like Winter in Telluride

IMG_0459 I was walking Gina the Dog on a Telluride afternoon, October 28. There was a break in the storm, and the late afternoon light on the San Miguel River also highlighted the peaks behind Telluride at the end of the valley. The sadness of seeing Autumn over is diminished by the thought of another Telluride Winter.

Chilly Halloween Parade in Telluride

Nana Jan The weather wasn't great, but Telluride kids didn't seem to care. The annual Halloween Parade went off anyway. Two things you can count on in Telluride: we love a parade, and we love to dress up. Halloween and the Fourth of July are good examples of these two likes coming together.

ps: Besides the video, this photo of Nana Jan and little Cate Grace Templin was too good to pass up.

Telluride Inside... and Out in New York

IMG_0457 IMG_0456 Dateline: Guggenheim Museum, New York, October 23, 2009

For Telluride Inside... and Out, strangers are just friends we haven't met yet. Leo and his parents were visiting from Geneva, Switzerland. The other work of art is by Kandinsky.

TIO is back in Telluride, but it was a good trip.

Ritual Holy Days, Dia de los Muertos and the Full "Hunters" Moon

250px-Jack-o'-Lantern_2003-10-31 Open the door to a week of mystical illusion and metaphysical possibility.  Spirits dance and souls cross, witches fly and ghosts haunt. We have reached the dramatic end of the pagan Celtic year and the celebration of Samhain, a three-day festival honoring the season’s harvest and marking summer’s end. In ancient times, bonfires dotted the nightscape and families gathered in groups and villages to share the fruits of their labors, tell stories, evoke spirits and pay homage to their gods and goddesses.

Day_of_the_Dead In the Catholic church, the end of October and the first days of November are marked by All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, times set aside for prayer and remembrance of those who have passed on. Cemeteries are visited and cleaned, private altars are built and the departed loved ones’ favorite foods and beverages are set on tables or placed on gravesites.

Today these ritual holy days have morphed into our modern day Halloween. In a blend of tradition, belief and fantasy, costumes and candy honor the dead, celebrate the harvest and invoke the mysterious. As the season of darkness reigns, the veil between life and death is thin. The crack between the worlds opens. Spooks walk and spirits cross. Keep your eyes and hearts open, set out those treats and take note of the annual full “Hunters' Moon” on Nov. 2nd – Dia de los Muertos - at 12:14 p.m. MST in the Scorpio/Taurus polarity. Happy hunting!

Fashion Friday: Legging jeans

[click "Play" to hear Kristin Holbrook on legging jeans]

Perfect with side zip ATT00137 Telluride Inside... and Out's fashionista Kristin Holbrook of Two Skirts is into the classics. Last week's subject was the blazer – albeit with contemporary twists primarily from Elizabeth and James – and this week, Kristin wants to talk about jeans, an enduring fashion staple and statement, but updated in combination with the legging. The look is great running errands or out on the town, which is why legging jeans have been spotted on SoCal stars from Isla Fisher to Hayden Panettiere and tween queen Selena Gomez. Plus, the price won't break your piggybank.

For more on how to wear leggy jeans, click the "play" button and listen to Kristin's podcast.

Nuggets from the Nugget: "Couples Retreat" and "Zombieland"

Zombieland_smallposter Couplesretreat_smallposter2 Telluride's Nugget Theatre is showing "Couples Retreat" and "Zombieland" the week of Friday, October 30-Thursday, November 5.

"Couples Retreat" (Rated PG 13) takes place in Bora Bora. Couple 1 is having some marital difficulties and for reasons of economy talks Couples 2-4 into joining the fun. Everyone gets therapy, as it turns out. And even the "happy" couples need it.

I won't say too much about "Zombieland" (Rated R for zombie violence) except to quote Roger Ebert: "...not many zombie comedies can make me think simultaneously about 'Psycho' and 'Garfield.'" He liked the movie, by the way.

See below for showtimes and the Nugget website for trailers and reviews.

"As You Like It" at the Palm in Telluride on October 29

Image-6865431-74767311-2-Web_0_bb2b77fb772eef0773f394e7b8cbe290_1 Image-6865431-74767418-2-Web_0_d0c3abfea8fdb3c3a126253e91131d86_1 Telluride will have the opportunity to see some Shakespeare tonight, October 29. The Aquila Theatre Company is bringing the Forest of Arden to the Palm Theatre stage in a single performance of "As You Like It."

The romantic comedy is built on mistaken identities, some intentional as the result of that old Telluride staple, crossdressing. The Bard is at his best, word play for the connoiseur. Curtain at the Palm is 6:30 pm.

350.org Day in Telluride big success

DSC_0690 Telluride's The New Community Coalition lead the charge locally on the global celebration of climate action, 350.org day, an event which brought together individuals, nonprofits and local businesses to finding local living solutions for worldwide climate change.

350.org day was also a perfect time to re-energize Telluride Renewed, the mayors challenge to the communities of Telluride and Mountain Village to produce 100% of our electricity from new renewable sources by 2020.

Steps to realize Telluride's ambitious begin with initiatives such as
• Energy, conservation and efficiency education programs
• "Greening the Gondola" ( Ben Williams and TNCC)

TNCC is also  researching the feasibility of:
• Solar panel array at the waste water treatment plant.
•  Local micro-hyrdo projects.

For more info please see the TNCC website or call (970) 728-1340.
