51z9tzTuRGL._SL500_AA300_ Another joint venture between Telluride’s two book outlets, the five-star Wilkinson Public Library and Between the Covers bookstore: On July 8, 6 p.m. Cinny Green, author of the “Trail Writer’s Guide,” gives a slideshow and talk, which includes a discussion about outdoor equipment, new technology in gear, water purification, etc. Her muse and Mona Lisa: the mountains of the Southwest.

“Take a hike” has a whole other positive meaning when Cinny Green is the one delivering the command. Cinny grew up in a 1950s suburb of Worcester, Massachusetts, where kids were told to “go outside and find something to do” from morning until night. Ever since, she has found a home outdoors, recently pioneering a mountain route between Santa Fe and Taos.

After teaching for 20 years and raising two daughters in rural Wisconsin, in 1996 Cinny Green decided to move to New Mexico to write and begin a second career as a book editor and writing coach. Outside Taos, Cinny and her partner built an adobe house and began to explore the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The explorations became longer and longer until being in backcountry became not just a pleasure, but a passion. Cinny has hiked many miles in the Rocky Mountains, the Pecos Wilderness, the Scottish Highlands. A trained Sierra Club hike leader, these days she also takes regular groups out to write in the wild.

Cinny’s “A Trail Writer’s Guide” is unique among books on writing in offering instruction about how to find your clearest and best voice for talking about your outdoor adventures. Its lessons based on themes of dialog, conflict, animal imagery, telling details, myth and story, personality and resolutions are applicable in many other contexts.
