IMG_4960 Telluride’s five-star Wilkinson Public Library and the Telluride Historical Museum present a first-person characterization celebrating one of the Holocaust’s most heroic women. Actress Judy Winnick performs “Irena Sendler, Angel of the Warsaw Ghetto.” The FREE event takes place, 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, at the Library.

Irene Sendler was a Polish social worker, who helped save 2,500 Jewish children. Under the pretext of inspecting the Warsaw ghetto’s sanitary conditions during a typhoid outbreak, Sendler and her assistants smuggled out the children, who were given a chance at survival by living as Catholics. The children, babies to teens, were placed in families, orphanages, hospitals and convents. In 1965, Sendler became one of the first so-called “Righteous gentiles” honored by the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem for wartime heroics.

Judy Winnick first came to town in July 2010, to perform with “The Legendary Ladies,” whose claim to fame is sharing often forgotten stories of unconventional women like themselves who made their mark on the American West. Among the other great women Winnick has portrayed is baseball player and team owner Maud Nelson. She is sure to hit it out of the box as Irene Sendler.
