Thursday evening, August 4, 8 p.m., just after Telluride Arts’ Art Walk, Telluride’s Wilkinson Public Library welcomes astronomer Dr. Donald Goldsmith to host an evening of stargazing designed to enlighten participants about our night sky. The tour begins with an easy scan of the major constellations of the summer sky, from the Big Dipper to the three bright stars of the Summer Triangle. The special event is free to all Library guests and patrons.
In the world of astronomy, Dr. Goldsmith is a Renaissance man, who dedicated three decades of his life to bringing an appreciation of astronomy to the general public. Towards that end, he has made a number of documentaries, including the television series “Cosmos,” featuring his mentor, Carl Sagan, the 1986 NOVA feature “Is Anybody Out There?” narrated by Lily Tomlin, and most recently the PBS special “400 Years of the Telescope.” The author of 16 books on subjects ranging from the search for life in the universe to astrophysics, Dr. Goldstein has taught or done research at prestigious academic institutions such as Stanford, Berkley, and Harvard.
Dr. Goldsmith even has a Telluride connection. He worked with local town councilman and filmmaker David Oyster on the “Cosmos” series back in 1980.
The tour starts at the Library and winds up in the Aldasoro subdivision, so carpooling is encouraged. Contact Scott Doser for further information at 728-4519 x20.
