FASHION FRIDAY: DRESSING FOR THE HOLIDAY

Wayward relatives are not the only reason to stress about Thanksgiving. There’s also the turkey to cook just right (or get tsk tsk looks from those wayward relatives). And the side and pies. Oh yes, and cleaning the good china. But the last thing you should worry about is what to wear. That’s where I come in with few tips and suggestions to get you through the first big event of the holiday season.

Thanksgiving is a notoriously long slog so you want to be comfortable yet still chic. Cocktail dresses and cranberry sauce are not a match. (Unless the dress is cranberry colored, but even so…). Standing around in stilettos while making the stuffing? Perilous as well as uncomfortable.

One answer is a sweater dress. They are cozy yet sophisticated, appropriate for a formal family affair and more importantly, not restrictive in the mid section – if you know what I mean! Mid-heel booties are a very comfortable footwear option and again, not restricting around the leg. Thanksgiving not only means being on your toes as the hostess. There’s also a lot of standing around on your feet and socializing.

And there’s a good deal of sitting on the couch watching the game. So you want to make sure the outfit you choose is right for couch surfing. That’s why I love the winter shorts with tights. Balance the short shorts with a fitted turtleneck and an opaque leg covering for a perfect polished look.

Not only might you watch the game, you also might engage in a little football pick up game yourself. (Anyone else remember the famous “Friends” Thanksgiving football episode?) So, if turkey day plans mean just hanging with your pals, be ready for anything in a pair of colored jeans, cashmere sweater, and puffy vest.

Again it’s all about comfort and still looking great. And maybe, just maybe, if you like the way your outfit looks, think about holding off on that extra helping of pie just so the next time you reach into your closet for the same outfit, everything still fits as well as you remember.

My suggestions for Thanksgiving gear are readily available everywhere, including my Main Street boutique, Two Skirts Telluride.
