What: The Sheridan Arts Foundation presents the 22nd annual Wild West Fest, a week-long celebration of Western arts, culture and customs in Telluride, Colo. The annual event brings disadvantaged inner-city and Native American youth from across the nation to town to take part in the Chip Allen Mentorship Program (C.A.M.P.).

C.A.M.P introduces these youth to the fields of drama, dance, horsemanship, fly-fishing, outdoor adventure and music for three full days. Additionally, the whole group will spend evenings barbecuing, experiencing farm life, swimming, playing games and attending the closing night concert at the historic Sheridan Opera House.

This year’s concert will feature Lord Huron, a alternative band based in Los Angeles. The concert will be free to the public (with a $15 suggested donation). Opening for the concert will be a short performance by the dance, drama, and music groups from the mentorships.

The SAF Wild West Fest 2013 will partner with Boys & Girls Club of America chapters from Phoenix, Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Colorado Springs, and New Mexico’s Navajo Reservation, as well as regional youth. Historically, the week-long experience culminates in new friendships and increased esteem and empowerment for the 12-18 year olds who participate.

The following is a letter from one of the kids who participated that makes the point:
