Second Chance: Pets at Telluride Farmers Market

Although a market seems a curious place for me to find a new home, two of my siblings managed to find their new families last week in Ridgway. So now it is my turn. I am heading for Telluride this Friday! That’s right, if you are eager for a new pet – those crazy canines are coming along too– but don’t want to make the drive to Second Chance’s Animal Resource Center in Ridgway, we are coming to you.
After I am adopted, there will be plenty of other cats (and dogs) also looking for homes so, again this year, plan to find adoptable pets at either the Telluride or Ridgway Farmers Market throughout the entire season. (Second Chance rotates locations weekly.)

The Markets take place 11a.m.– 4 p.m. each week and you can find  fruits, veggies, crafts, etc., but Second Chance has found them to be great places to “market” purring, wagging, seekers of love and support like me. In addition to me and three or four other felines, Nitro will be one of at least five Second Chance dogs also visiting Telluride on the 14th.

Nitro is the favorite of the kitties here at Second Chance. He was a stray who was transferred from one of the partner shelters because he had essentially “grown up” there and his people wanted to give this rather remarkable pup a boost toward his second chance.  At only 11 months of age, having spent half his life homeless, he is one of the more laid back and good natured guys that I have ever met (and that is coming from me…a kitten). Athletic and strikingly handsome, Nitro is sure to be a hit in Telluride…

My name is Duncan. I was rescued with my litter mates from a life of homelessness. Social, cuddly, soft, sensitive, curious, I will light up your life like I do for all the shelter staff and volunteers here at Second Chance.

Hope to see you on Friday in Telluride. And more than that, I hope you take me home.

Editor’s note: It’s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue.  Second Chance is the region’s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals’ lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. In her weekly blog, executive director Kelly Goodin profiles two of the many animals now living at the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving permanent homes. The column is sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer, partnering with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.

By the by, there is no better place to park your pup than Cottonwood whenever you head out of town (for locals) or are heading to town and staying somewhere that does not allow pets. Consider joining Ted’s Very Important Dog (VID) Club for added benies. (Details on Ted’s website.)

Second Chance Humane Society Animal Resource Center and Thrift Shop are both located in Ridgway, but service San Miguel, Ouray & Montrose Counties. Call the SCHS Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet, learn about adopting a homeless pet, or about the SCHS Spay/Neuter, Volunteer, Feral Cat, or other Programs.
