This summer, the Palm Theatre and Palm Arts are launching a professional summer dance series in Telluride. And if all goes well, 2013 will be the birth of a consistent, sustainable summer dance series at the Palm Theatre.

Years ago, a group of dance lovers formed Dance! Telluride and erected a tent in the Mountain Village each summer to host professional dance residencies and performances. The amount of work and expense required to mount the productions was extraordinary, but the effort brought numerous dance lovers to Telluride and left a lasting impression on the extended community.

Fast forward ten years. Telluride now has the Palm Theatre, which was designed for dance and showcases national and local talent exceptionally well. Resurrecting the tradition of bringing professional dance in the summer, the Palm Theatre will present two world renowned companies: MOMIX: Botanica, Tuesday, July 16, 8 p.m. and Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Thursday, August 1, 8 p.m.

Known internationally for presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty, MOMIX is a company of dancer-illusionists under the direction of Moses Pendleton.

Over 40 years, Pendleton established a reputation as one of America’s most innovative and widely performed choreographers and directors. A founding member of the ground-breaking Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971, he formed his own company, MOMIX, in 1980. Pendleton has also worked extensively in film, TV, and opera and as a choreographer for ballet companies and special events.

Complexions

Complexions

It is artistic directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson’s lifelong appreciation for the artistic and aesthetic appeal of the multi-cultural that forms the cornerstone of Complexions Contemporary Ballet’s singular approach to reinventing dance.

Founded in 1994, Complexions’ groundbreaking mix of methods, styles, and cultures has created an entirely new and exciting vision of human movement over the past 18 years. Complexions has received numerous awards including the New York Times “Critics Choice” Award. The company’s foremost innovation is that dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them. Whether it be the limiting traditions of a single style, period, venue, or culture, Complexions transcends them all, creating an open, continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of our world—and all its constituent cultures—as an interrelated whole.

“Both MOMIX and Complexions are internationally renowned dance companies, and it is such an honor to share this caliber of talent with the Telluride community,” states Heather Rommel, executive director of the Palm Theatre. “For all dance lovers and our Palm Arts aspiring young dancers and dance families, not having to leave our valley to experience these performances is an incredible gift.”

The summer dance performances are reserved seating shows and tickets are $42 for adults and $22 for students and children per show.

Discounts are available if attending both shows and all details can be found at www.telluridepalm.com or by calling 970.369.5669.
