Susie Billings at Ah Haa: Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun

billingsSusan X. Billings is the kind of protean talent who is out there to prove that all of life is art. A glimpse at any one of her mixed media images or her new woodblock prints tells the story: the work has nothing to do with ‘”isms” du jour or with art historians’ creaky theories. It has everything to do with being an original with a big soul, a richness of spirit, and an unquenchable curiosity. Susie’s collages are not representational. It is the resonance of a thing the artist is out to capture in her work, not the thing itself.

And she will teach you to do much the same in her still life class at the Ah School for the Arts, Saturday and Sunday, August 3 and August 4, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In “The Art of Still Life: A Creative Painting Journey,” by exploring a lively range of mediums (ink, pastel, watercolor, charcoal, collage) and techniques (line, shadow, color block, perspective), Susie will guide students toward composing their own dynamic still life from which they will be coached to create paintings using various approaches.

Susie’s second class is all about artistic journaling, chronicling your life by using a wide variety of techniques, materials and compositional ideas. One-on-one instruction during class will provide time for students to refine their techniques and try out new materials.

“The Art-Full Journal” takes place Tuesdays, August 6 – August 27, (meeting once a week), 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. (The course is one month long to allow a true journal to evolve.)

Susan X. Billings is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. She currently splits her time between studios in southern Baja and southwestern Colorado. She is an instructor, painter, and graphic designer whose vibrant, signature paintings can be seen at the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art. In 2011, Susan was selected by Colorado Homes and Lifestyles magazine as one of 10 “most collectable” Colorado artists.
