August 1 to 8, 2013   Visible Planets: Morning: Mercury    Evening: Jupiter, Saturn

lion zodiacWe all know the lion as the king – or queen – of beasts. Strong, courageous and proud, no animal on earth catches the attention and stimulates the imagination like this one. For millennia, humankind has held the lion as a symbol of strength, power and passion. Its magnificent mane, tremendous teeth and resounding roar give us good reason to stop and take note. We feel danger; our instinctive awareness identifies the presence of a creature capable of ripping us to shreds. Stunning, awesome and beautiful, enticing and enchanting, the primal relationship aroused by the regal lion is one that excites our senses and awakens the hidden, ancient memories buried deep within our psychic DNA.

In the tropical zodiac, the lion is the symbol for the fixed fire sign of Leo. In the night sky, it is a springtime constellation relatively easy to identify, shaped like a lion and containing its own heart-star, Regulus – the “little king” – a 1st magnitude double blue-white giant, just 86 light years away from earth. In mid-November, the Leonid meteors – a once spectacular group of “shooting stars” – radiate from the Lion’s stellar heart, dazzling those willing to rise before dawn and wish upon a star.

sunflower1Each calendar year, from July 23rd to August 22nd, we experience the power and passion of the Leo zodiac month. Sunflowers blossom with dramatic grace and color, peaches ripen, clouds gather and tower above verdant greens and emerging golds, raindrops fall and rainbows follow. And every year, we experience the lunation of a Leo new Moon, the perfect time to find and follow your heart.

open heartThis year, the Leo new Moon takes place on August 6th at 3:51 pm MDT, at the exact point of mid-summer, on the Leo cross-quarter day, when electromagnetic pulls are at a peak. And coupled with a Uranus in Aries trine to the Moon and the magnifying potential of Jupiter now in Cancer, we are awakened to the powerful energetics of a cardinal T-square – one of the most intense, creative, dynamic aspects in astrology. Pluto and Mars are players as well here, along with feminine asteroids Ceres, Vesta and Pallas. This translates as a magnificently grand, shimmering and shining opportunity for starting fresh, beginning anew in all matters of the heart.

Independence, freedom, originality and creativity are themes. Laughter, love and luxury are pastimes. Purple, red and gold are colors. Talent, self-expression and passion are directors. Free your heart, follow your bliss, find your passion. And may the mighty Lion be your guide, protector and companion. Happy trails!

Capricorn (Dec. 21-Jan. 19) Giant Jupiter plays a starring role in this week’s Leo new Moon, and continues to shimmer and shape dynamic awakenings and opportunities throughout the first half of 2014. For Capricorns, the emphasis and impact takes place in the roles you play and the responsibilities you have in relationship. Be open and willing to see the truth here and embrace it.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Dynamic power, challenges and victories abound as you see yourself pitted against the odds, working in tandem with the universe. What is being asked for is the embodiment of cosmic consciousness, be the star you are. Abstract and ethereal, it’s all about the world and energy of spirit. You, like others, are a conduit of knowledge. Share your light.
