We’re Skiing in Telluride!

The Beach, 11-27-2013The official ski season in Telluride opens tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day. Real enthusiasts have been hiking up to earn their turns for weeks around here with all the early season snow. But today, was Donation Day, the first chance to ski (limited) terrain by riding a lift up the mountain. A $25 donation gave one a ticket to ride, the money going to support the Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club. We were skiing on Lift 4, and the only runs that were open were Village Bypass and Misty Maiden, but I didn’t hear any complaints: regulars remember too many opening days when we skied on a narrow ribbon of man-made snow. The conditions today: sunny skies, well-groomed full width runs of mostly natural snow. I skied with two good friends, shouted hellos to lots of others, and generally had a ball. And a sandwich and a beer at the bottom for a late lunch in the sun. A nice start to what could be a banner season.

It looks like tomorrow and Friday will still be Lift 4, but according to Telluride Ski Resort’s Facebook page, the plan is to have Lifts 5 and 6 open this weekend. I know, we get spoiled here with the variety of terrain available, but there is much to enjoy. And remember that narrow ribbon of man-made snow of winters past…
