The Groove Abides: Two Hot New Bands Cap 2013 at Opera House

The Oh Hellos

The Oh Hellos

What I love best about music writing is discovering new bands. And, lucky for all of us, if I’m writing about a band I’ve never heard of, they must be appearing on a stage in Telluride. This week, the good folks at the Sheridan Opera House are treating us to not one, but two fresh young bands that are in the early chapters of their respective careers. For this year-end treat of exciting, new bands playing back-to-back dates, I take a bow to the hip and curious Opera House stewards. Not only is the 100-year-old venue a treat for performers and music-lovers alike, but the grand old lady is young at heart. Thank you.

Hello, Oh Hellos!

This Saturday, December 28, The Oh Hellos will seduce us with their gentle, lyrical folk-rock. The brother-sister duo of Tyler and Maggie Heath hail from the great state of Texas, where massively talented musicians of every stripe seem to be the Lone Star republic’s most beloved export. The Heaths are no exception. Their songs are delicate little masterpieces, delivered with a soft touch and exquisite musicianship. In the spirit of the holidays, The Oh Hellos released The Oh Hellos Family Christmas Album, a sublime collection of gorgeously rendered songs that perfectly capture the beauty of the season. Tyler and Maggie tour and perform with a huge band of kindred spirits – SOH PR and Marketing guru, Kathrine Warren says the band numbers 10 or more – who fill out their eclectic sound. For fans of The Head and the Heart or The Lumineers, The Oh Hellos will have immense appeal.

Sanctified! The Delta Saints

Now this band has crossed my path. Let’s be clear about this: I am a rock and roller and that designation in life means that like will attract like. Naturally, a band like The Delta Saints, whose dirty, gritty, steam-engine drive and feral, live throw-downs has found its way to my ears. I am over the moon that they will be playing on Sunday, December 29 at the Opera House. The intimacy of the venue will be conducive to their group-howl live outings and songs like “Momma” will tear the roof off the joint.

Their new record, Death Letter Jubilee – a fine example of Kickstarter success – is a mature collection of songs that belie the band’s relative youth. Worldly beyond their years, the songs display insight, humor and ferocity, underpinned by come-sit-by-me bass lines, urgent harmonica, fierce guitar and dobro work.

The Nashville-based Delta Saints are Ben Ringel on vocals/dobro, guitarist Dylan Fitch, David Supica on bass, and Ben Azzi on drums. They tour incessantly and that experience on the road both at home and abroad, gives their rootsy sound a well-honed, tight groove.
