The Telluride  Film Festival and Wilkinson Public Library are pleased to present Cinematheque, a collaboration that brings Festival-quality films year-round to the community of Telluride. The current series, entitled They Came to Telluride: Women Behind the Lens, explores influential women filmmakers from an international stage, all of whom have attended the Telluride Film Festival with their works. As always, admission is free and patrons will enjoy food, drink, and lively discussion as part of the SHOW. The evening will be hosted by producer, director, film professor and local cinephile, David Oyster.

The series continues Monday, February 3, 2014 with PERSEPOLIS (Marjane Satrapi, France/US, 2007, 96 min, Rated PG-13).

“It’s a mind blower,” wrote Peter Travers of Rolling Stone of this animated adaptation of Marjane Satrapi’s bestselling autobiographical graphic novel.

Chronicling her experiences growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution, the film features the voice talents of Sean Penn, Gena Rowlands, Catherine Deneuve, and Iggy Pop. Nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe (Best Foreign Language Film).

Marjane Satrapi grew up in Tehran where her parents were both very politically active in opposition to the monarchy of the last Shah. During the Iranian Revolution, her family faced intimidation by the fundamentalist Muslims who came into power. To protect their daughter, her parents sent Marjane to study in Vienna at the Lycée Français de Vienne. Her career as a graphic artist blossomed, and she chronicled her childhood in Iran and adolescence in Europe in her “Persepolis” graphic novel series, adapted for the the big screen beautifully in this stunning film about which Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian writes, “Here is an adaptation so inspired, so simple and so frictionless in its transformation of the source material that it’s almost a miracle.”
