30 Mar Mountainfilm in Telluride: More 2014 Featured Guests & Volunteers
Updated List Includes Leading Names in Conservation, Adventure, and Advocacy
Mountainfilm in Telluride just released the latest in an expanding roster of festival guest speakers, including new additions to the line-up for the Moving Mountains Symposium, which will focus on the theme of “wilderness.”
In addition to the Symposium speakers previously announced — such as Jared Diamond, Cheryl Strayed, M Sanjayan and others — the festival has added talks by national wilderness advocates Douglas Brinkley, Juan Martinez and Jamie Williams.

Douglas Brinkley has testified before Congress on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, has written about the environmental movement during the era of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, 1961 to 1964 — which culminated in the historic American Wilderness Act in 1964 — and is currently writing a book about FDR and the American conservation movement.

National Geographic Emerging Explorer and environmentalist Juan Martinez is a national spokesman for the importance of getting youth into the outdoors, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Jamie Williams owns a straw-bale home in Paonia, Colorado, but currently resides in Washington, D.C., where he is the president of The Wilderness Society, the conservation organization leading American efforts to protect our nation’s shared wildlands.

Mountainfilm has also released a list of several confirmed festival speakers:
When Mountainfilm audiences first met climber Alex Honnold in 2010’s Alone on the Wall, he was already breaking records in the dangerous sport of free climbing. Now, arguably the most famous athlete in his sport, Honnold will return to Mountainfilm to talk about suffering, failure and risk. Morgan Spurlock will bring his groundbreaking Super Size Me to Telluride for a 10th anniversary retrospective screening, along with some of his latest provocative work. And famed alpinist Conrad Anker will join ethnobotanist and academic Wade Davis to discuss the mysteries still surrounding George Mallory’s attempted ascent of Mount Everest 90 years ago in 1924.

“It is shaping up to be another exciting year for us at Mountainfilm with a great mix of new and old guests,” says Mountainfilm in Telluride Festival Director David Holbrooke. “We’ve been hoping to get Jared Diamond to the festival for years and are always happy to have old friends like Conrad Anker and Wade Davis come back to town.”

Programming staff are working hard to finalize the film list, which will be announced in early May. In the meantime, keep an eye out for additional announcements on artists and special programs.

We invite you to join our volunteer ranks for the 36th annual Mountainfilm in Telluride Festival. The festival will feature approximately 80 films from around the world as well as pioneering artists, adventurers and advocates. We’ll host diverse educational and social events throughout the weekend, including the Moving Mountains Symposium on the topic of wilderness.
Volunteer for Mountainfilm 2014 and earn your festival pass. 16 hours of work will get you a Sunshine pass, and 22 volunteer hours will earn you an all-access Wilson pass.
