Second Chance: Howl-O-Ween Humiliations

Second Chance: Howl-O-Ween Humiliations

Have you ever seen a pet look happy in a Halloween costume?  I haven’t, but you people keep right on dressing us up anyway.  And we indulge you because we love you so much (and we are secretly planning our revenge: sneaking treats off the counter or drooling on your Halloween costume).

Superwoman Sweetness

Superwoman Sweetness

Dressing up pets has become just as much a part of the Halloween tradition as pumpkins, witches, and black cats and despite the discomfort, we do appreciate being included. So I am starting a new adoption promotion slogan: Halloween: Find Your Adoptable Pet to Humiliate at Your Local Shelter!

We know it is all in fun and so we will continue to give you this one day to pretend we are dress-up dolls. (Don’t even think about pulling out that turkey costume on Thanksgiving!!!) We would rather you dress us up than forget about us on this fun holiday. Just make sure we get extra treats (not the chocolate kind of course) for being patient as we entertain you.

Speaking of Halloween and pets in costume, we had a great Howl-O-Ween Hustle 5K Fun Run last weekend, which Chow Down Pet Supplies in Montrose sponsored.  You should have seen some of the costumes the bewildered dogs were squeezed into. The first place winner was “Little Bo Peep and Her Found Sheep.”  Second place went to “Thing 1 and Thing 2.” Good thing most pets don’t embarrass easily…

So if you are lacking a critter to mortify, I am volunteering. Anything for a good home right?  For the Chow Down run I went dressed as Superwoman. It is true, me, a sweet member of the pitbull breed turns into Superwoman in a flash when help is needed. They call me Sweetness because I am sweeter than the best Halloween treat and because, despite being not properly treated in the past (what they did to my ears!!!), I am gentle and loving to all.

My dog pals will make me regret saying this,  but thank you for letting us be part of the Halloween fun. (But leave us safely at home for the Trick or Treating part. That stuff is way too scary for even the likes of Superwoman.)

And my name is Helena, and don’t even think about trying to dress me up . I am a feline, made for purring out loud, but we don’t do dress up! Yes I am cuddly and also sugary sweet baby, also abandoned to fend for myself at a young age, but I will not be humiliated. I will however, welcome you home from your Halloween exploits with purrs and soft head butts…

Editor’s note: It’s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Well, pet heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue. Second Chance is the region’s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals’ lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. In her weekly blog, executive director Kelly Goodin profiles at least one, generally two of the many animals now living at the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving permanent homes. The column is sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer, partnering with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.

By the by, there is no better place to park your pup than Cottonwood whenever you head out of town (for locals) or are heading to town and staying somewhere that does not allow pets. Consider joining Ted’s Very Important Dog (VID) Club for added benies. (Details on Ted’s website.)

Second Chance Humane Society Animal Resource Center and Thrift Shop are both located in Ridgway, but service San Miguel, Ouray & Montrose Counties. Call the SCHS Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet, learn about adopting a homeless pet, or about the SCHS Spay/Neuter, Volunteer, Feral Cat, or other Programs.
