Second Chance: Whine & Whiskers

Second Chance: Whine & Whiskers

The Second Chance staff and volunteers are running around like manic bobbleheads this week murmuring words like “whine (or is it wine?),” “whiskers,” “auction,” and “fashion” instead of “sit” and “stay.” I am not sure what is going on but they are saying it is all being done for me and my other sheltermates, so I decided I need to investigate. As a hound mix sleuthing about is what I do best, and this is what I discovered…

Wine & Whiskers takes place on March 19 and March 21 and as many know, it is a unique and fun-filled party for a great cause (me!). But what you may not know is that, in addition to all the great food, auction, fashion show, and dancing, Wine & Whiskers helps pets like me find our new families.

How? Well I sniffed that out last year and found there were actual shelter dogs in the fashion show. I have a strong suspicion that may happen again. Personally I have a keen sense of fashion and feel that my ears alone make a particularly grand statement.

But also, I have discovered that on average it costs $550 per month to care for a shelter pet here at Second Chance. So during the event’s live auction, where you are provided with opportunities to win vacation packages and adventure-filled excursions, you are also able to sponsor an adoption-challenged shelter pet. Such a pet is exemplified by Jezebel, the furry feline, who has been waiting for adoption for 10 long months now. By sponsoring her care you are making a difference in the life of a very deserving homeless animal.

A dog who is up for sponsorship is my friend Hobbes. Hobbes is on his third chance now – as his second chance occurred when he arrived at Second Chance as a pup. But a year after his adoption, he was returned to the shelter and now he is having a hard time finding his new family (being returned can do a number on your confidence…).  So we are hoping at this Wine & Whiskers not only will someone sponsor Hobbes, but also be moved by his story and adopt him.

So many reasons to attend this weekend’s fund- and awareness-raiser, but if you still need convincing – just picture me (my name is Bailey by the way…) in my Christian Louboutin heels and Armani dress (yes all from the Second Chance Thrift Shops…) doing that catwalking thingie in front of my adoring fans.

See you at the show!

Editor’s note: It’s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Well, pet heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue. Second Chance is the region’s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals’ lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. In her weekly blog, executive director Kelly Goodin profiles at least one, generally two of the many animals now living at the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving permanent homes. The column is sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer, partnering with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.

By the by, there is no better place to park your pup than Cottonwood whenever you head out of town (for locals) or are heading to town and staying somewhere that does not allow pets. Consider joining Ted’s Very Important Dog (VID) Club for added benies. (Details on Ted’s website.)

Second Chance Humane Society Animal Resource Center and Thrift Shop are both located in Ridgway, but service San Miguel, Ouray & Montrose Counties. Call the SCHS Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet, learn about adopting a homeless pet, or about the SCHS Spay/Neuter, Volunteer, Feral Cat, or other Programs.
