Second Chance: Pet for A Day Program

Second Chance: Pet for A Day Program

Your “Dog for a Day” program sounds perfect for me as I can’t have a pet in my home, but I want to help find homes for pets that don’t have one. Do you also have Cat for a Day program? Sincerely, Cuckoo for Cats

Dear Cuckoo,

Yes indeed, we have some cats here at Second Chance that would do well in a Cat for a Day program. Although you can’t put on an “Adopt Me” vest and walk them around town, some of them would make great office cats for certain businesses. And similar to the Adoption Ambassador Program, although your foster pet would not be living with you, having a pet for the day allows you to do a lot with social media promotion to help find a furry feline a new home.

Although there are some basic safety measures that need to be addressed, the Cat for a Day program can work with more outgoing cats such as me. My name is Grover and I am only 18-months-young and yes, homeless. However I am very friendly, curious, bold, awesome, and do great with other cats and dogs so having an adventure as a shop cat for a day (as long as you take precautions to prevent me from getting out the door) could really help me find my new family more quickly.

The other option for those who want to help me and my friends find homes but can’t take us to your homes or office is to do a “virtual foster,” which means you simply promote a pet of your choice, particularly one who has been waiting for awhile, for adoption. You can develop your own social media campaign to send out that shows how awesome a certain pet really is.  You can come to the shelter and get great photos of that pet that really highlights its unique characteristics.

And for your dog loving friends who may be interested there are dogs such as Titan who would also enjoy a weekly excursion.  Titan, a Dane/Pointer mix, is also only 18 months and a super affectionate, loving and happy dog.  He would enjoy partnering with someone for a weekly hike or meeting new people at the office…

Similar to the Adoption Ambassador program detailed in last week’s Pet Column, Second Chance asks for a minimum of a two week commitment to participate in this program.  Second Chance also offers extensive support for these programs such as pet training, ideas for marketing your foster pet, resources such as food, treats and medical, and other support Ambassadors request.  Contact Second Chance today (info below) to learn more about this exciting program!

Editor’s note: It’s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Well, pet heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue. Second Chance is the region’s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals’ lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. In her weekly blog, executive director Kelly Goodin profiles at least one, generally two of the many animals now living at the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving permanent homes. The column is sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer, partnering with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.
