Telluride Library: Amazing Author Greg Hobbs

“Amazing Author,” poet, water rights activist, and retired Colorado Supreme Court justice Greg Hobbs presents at Telluride’s five-star Wilkinson Public Library Monday, May 15, 6 p.m. Event is free and open to the public.

This coming Monday at Telluride’s five-star library, Greg Hobbs will read from his book “Into the Grand,” a beautiful collection of poetry, prose, essays, and photography about the Colorado Plateau and its rivers and landscapes. His writing makes clear his love for the land; the man does not stand above as an aloof observer in black robes. Hobbs moves easily from the ephemeral to the concrete and will also speak to the future of water use in Colorado based on his years as an activist and justice.

Hobbs resides in Denver, but spends much of his free time in Southwest Colorado. He practiced environmental, transportation, land use, and water law for 23 years before becoming a Colorado Supreme Court Justice from 1996-2015. His books, “Into the Grand” and “Living the Four Corners: Colorado Centennial State at the Headwaters,” speak to our human relationship with and love for the magical landscapes of the Southwest.

Interesting side note: Greg Hobbs is the brother of Will Hobbs, author of 19 novels for young adult readers, including the well-loved “Downriver.”

Below is “Organic Garlic Offering,” from the Colorado Water 2012 Book Club selection, “Living the Four Corners: Colorado Centennial State at the Headwaters.”

Hobbs is inspired by his son Dan, who farms organic garlic in the Arkansas Valley.

Organic Garlic Offering

Pick a spot of Colorado
sun below the ditch

October morning
plant them firm,

To root your hopes
set them loose

But turn
some water in

July’s the harvesting,
Purple Glazer, Silver White

Music Pink, Romanian Red,
Chesnok Inchelium, California Early,

Heirloom pungent, easy peel
good for salsa, pestos

Eating fresh and clean
saving this good farmland

Gregg Hobbs is the last in the 2016/17 Amazing Authors series, a collaboration of the Bayfield, Cortez, and Wilkinson Public Libraries. The 2017/18 authors will be announced this summer.
