Talking Gourds: Tracy Lightsey, 11/14
The November edition of the Talking Gourds Poetry Club takes place Tuesday, November 14, 6 p.m. at the Telluride Arts HQ, 135 West Pacific, across the street from Telluride’s Wilkinson Library. The featured artist is Tracy Lightsey.
“It’s an honor to welcome long-time Montrose poet and educator Tracy A. Lightsey to read at the Talking Gourds Poetry Club Nov. 14th,” announced program co-director Art Goodtimes.
Lightsey is from Montrose, Colorado, where he still lives. He began his career as a musician, then moved into poetry. Lightsey has taught creative writing at Montrose High School for 14 years. Many of his graduates have gone on to MFA programs around the country, as well as participating in the National Poetry Slam Finals in Denver this year.
Lightsey’s primary interest is in the shamanic possibilities of poetry, accessing memories held in the body and bringing them to a kind of light through words. He studied at the University of Northern Colorado with master teacher James Doyle.
The reading begins, 6 p.m., Tuesday November, 14, at the Telluride Arts HQ, 135 West Pacific, across the street from the Wilkinson Library. Poetry Club announcements are followed by the featured performance. Then, following a short break, the gourd is passed and everyone has a chance to read a poem or two (their own, or one from a favorite poet) that speaks to the theme, “The Power of Community.”
Having hosted Avon’s Jodie Hollander and Luis Lopez of Grand Junction and Val Szarek of Louisville for the fall Traveling Gourds Tour in Sept. and Oct., Talking Gourds is reverting back to its Telluride-only venue at the Telluride Arts Gallery as it moves into the winter season.
The Traveling Gourds Tour begins again in March of next year with Jennifer Rane Hancock of Grand Junction and possibly a second spring tour with California’s Claire Blotter.
Talking Gourds programming survives through the generous support of private donors and Club members. There is a one-time fee of $25 to join the Talking Gourds Poetry Club. That makes you a full member for a year and gets you on its mailing list for readings, festivals and contests.
Membership also means you are one of those generous supporters who believes in the importance of the arts on the Western Slope. A $10 annual renewal fee keeps you up-to-date as a full member, renews your subscription to the Gourds private email newsletter, and gives you half-price for Fischer Prize submissions and free Poetry Club broadsides.
Talking Gourds Poetry Club, the Traveling Gourds Tour and Gourd Guests are collaborative projects of the Telluride Institute, in partnership with the Wilkinson Public Library, Between the Covers Bookstore, Ah Haa School for the Arts, Lithic Bookstore & Gallery, Paonia Public Library, the Telluride Literary Arts Festival, Telluride Arts, the Telluride Mushroom Festival, and club members.
