The Telluride Film Festival’s Sunday at the Palm series is pleased to present the classic, five-time Oscar-winner (including Best Actress) on the big screen. MARY POPPINS has been remastered and re-released from the Disney Vault in celebration of the 50-year Anniversary of this American treasure.

“I find it irresistible,”  wrote Bosley Crowther of the New York Times upon the film’s release in 1964, “Plenty of other adults will feel the same way. And, needless to say, so will the kids.”

Adapted from P.L. Travers book, MARY POPPINS is considered to be one of the greatest of Walt Disney’s personally supervised films.  The story follows the British Banks family, whose parental team (David Tomlinson and Glynis Johns) are at their wits end by the fact that their two children (Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber) cannot seem to keep a nanny.  When the kids finally compose their own ad, requesting someone with a kind heart and a bit of imagination, they are all startled by the umbrella-wielding arrival of Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews in her debut film role).

Mary takes the children on fantastical adventures and manages them with a simultaneously firm and loving touch – just what the two have always craved. They visit her friend Bert (Dick Van Dyke), a chimney sweep who leads them into a cartoon countryside through one of his chalk drawings. They laugh themselves to the ceiling with Bert’s uncle (Ed Wynn).  Through music, joy and adventure, Mary’s affection and magic are just enough to bring the Banks family together at last.
