Palm Arts Dance: Spring Recital

Palm Arts Dance: Spring Recital

“You’re the One That I Love”: Dance recital at the Palm Theatre, Sunday, June 1,  features the best of  “On Broadway”

“Grease.” It’s the musical theatre equivalent of a double cheeseburger deluxe with a side of fries. Dance moves in popular rock ’n roll romp can fly as high as petticoats under a wide swing felt skirt, swivel like a Warren Miller chair, or grind like a beans in a coffee machine.

Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2 p.m., Palm Arts Dance features “On Broadway,” 20 dance numbers choreographed to popular Broadway tunes from “Cats,” “Mary Poppins,” “Les Misérables,” “All That Jazz,” “Fame,” “Wicked,” “Sound of Music,” “My Fair Lady,” “Little Mermaid” – and “Grease.”

The director of the show is Ms. Shirley Fortenberry, who is also artistic director for Palm Arts Dance.

Miss Shirley’s vision for the recital began with a desire to expose her students to some of the most memorable musicals of our time. However, making the show work not only for  ballet, but also for jazz, tap, hip hop and modern dance, was quite a challenge. But her students proved to be disciplined, openly embracing the varied choreography.

Miss Shirley attests: “‘On Boradway’ was such a great experience for my students because they learned to use dance, mime and music, and were an integral part of the process of creating an in-depth Broadway experience everyone should enjoy.”

“On Broadway” showcases the talent of over 80 local dancers, ages three to 18, who have been very busy preparing for the last nine weeks.

The dedication and vision of choreographers Fortenberry, Keri Sutton, and Jessica Galbo will be on parade in this “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” show, sure to please audiences of any age or musical bent.

So, “you better shape up” and head on over to the Palm for a wonderful afternoon of dance.

Tickets, $15 for adults; $10 for students and children, are available at the door on the day of show.
