Allred’s Recognized by Wine Spectator Magazine

Local restaurant is recipient of 2014 “Best of Award of Excellence”

Time to raise a glass to Allred’s restaurants  for their recent recognition from Wine Spectator magazine for a 2014 Best of Award of Excellence honor. A 10-year winner of the Award of Excellence, Allreds’ recent achievement to the next level represents devotion of head Sommelier, Andrew Shaffner, and the continued determination on behalf of the restaurant to offer a supreme dining experience to its guests. The winners of this year’s Restaurant Awards program will be published in Wine Spectator’s Annual Restaurant guide, highlighting the world’s best wine lists. These featured establishments are at the vanguard of wine-and-food culture.

Allred’s is one of only 883 other restaurants, spanning all 50 states and more than 80 countries, venerated for the second tier of three in Wine Spectator’s awards. Created to give special recognition to the restaurants that clearly exceed the requirements of the Award of Excellence, Best of Award of Excellence recipients typically offer 400 or more selections, along with superior presentation, and display either vintage depth, with several vertical offerings of top wines, or excellent breadth across several wine regions. Allred’s joins La Piazza Del Villaggio Ristorante and Rustico Ristorante locally in this accolade.

“We are honored to become one of less than 900 restaurants in the world to achieve this level of quality and recognition,” states Andrew Shaffner, Allreds’ head Sommelier and Wine Director for Telluride Ski Resort, “It is no simple task to be acknowledged by one of the leading lifestyle magazines in the world, and I personally would like to thank the Spectator for its humbling recognition.”

Allred’s wine list has about 750 different labels and over 5,000 bottles in the cellar with numerous verticals, breadth and depth across regions and varietals, and comprehensive coverage of the entire world of wine. Most recently Allred’s has been selling the newly created, Telluride Red. Blended by Shaffner and Vintage Wine Estates Director Kelly Graves, this 75% Cabernet Sauvignon/10% Merlot/10% Cabernet Franc/5%Malbec is dark purple in color with a very expressive nose of dark fruit (plums, black raspberries, cassis), and balanced oak (vanilla, nutmeg, cocoa).  The palate echoes the nose with crushed brambles, plums, cocoa, coffee, and vanilla. The wine is dry and medium plus in body with ripe tannins, and a medium plus finish.

“We are very proud of Andrew, his accomplishments, and are pleased to offer such an exceptional wine list to our customers,” says Mario Petillo, General Manager of Allred’s, “the Best of Award of Excellence is truly and honor.”
