Regional high school students, Pinhead Institute interns, share their life-changing internship experiences with the community, Thursday, October 16, Opera House.
Eight fabulous Pinhead Interns each present a short summary of their amazing summers.
Sculpt screws to hold a control panel for a satellite? Check.
Kill bacteria in the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis? Check.
Feed genetically identical mice diets of different fat content? Check.
Inseminate cows? Check.
Pinhead Institute’s interns did all that and much, much more.
“Pinhead attracts the best and brightest high school students in Southwestern Colorado interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and launches them into internships with universities, labs, and institutes, where they perform research at college levels. We are so proud of our amazing interns,” says Sarah Holbrooke, Pinhead’s executive director. “We want the whole community to be inspired when hearing what they accomplished this summer.”
“We are also excited to announce that Pinhead is opening the internship for the first time to students from the Cortez school district, and also second homeowners with qualifying kids,” continued Holbrooke. “In addition, there will be a brief but powerful fundraising effort during the evening as Pinhead has secured a matching donation of up to $25,000.00 for that night. So each dollar donated will be worth $2 to Pinhead. We’ll also be auctioning off a pair of Wagner skis, generously donated by the company.”
Founded in 2003, the Pinhead Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to gain practical skills and experience in various scientific fields of study, including (but not limited to) math, physics, conservation, chemistry, museum science, computer programming, geological survey and biology. Pinhead internships provide experiences and opportunities for students to work with people who have dedicated their lives to academic pursuits about which they are passionate.
This program affords regional students opportunities to work in various STEM fields, and it often is a life-changing experience. Since the inception of this extraordinary program, Pinhead has placed nearly 60 students in internships around the world, and its graduates have gone on to attend prestigious universities like Harvard and Yale.
Pinhead Interns work with researchers at leading universities and institutions across the country on critical research including biodiversity, cutting-edge satellite engineering, veterinary medicine, geology, medical advances, and climate change. The 2014 Interns include Mikaela Balkind (Telluride High School), Jessica Jackman (Telluride High School), Marten Kendall (Ridgway Secondary School), Sabine Linder (Ridgway Secondary School), Aaron Morgan (Nucla High School), Danielle Nguyen (Farmington), Zachary Nunn (Telluride High School) and Noah Perkovich (Telluride Mountain School).
Pinhead is proud to host an evening of student presentations at which friends, family and community members can learn more about the extraordinary learning opportunities these students experienced this past summer.
Join Pinhead on Thursday, October 16, at the Sheridan Opera House to listen to presentations by our 2014 Pinhead Interns. A reception with cash bar held takes place 5:45-6:45 p.m. Presentations will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. The event is free of charge and open to the entire community.
This is a particularly great evening for students interested in applying for the summer 2015 program to attend with their parents to learn and be inspired more directly from an incredible crop of former interns.
