Paul Major, President & CEO of the Telluride Foundation leads a discussion on the characteristics of a financially healthy nonprofit organization, including having a financial reserve, diverse revenue sources, and a good balance of operating income and expenses. 2)  The second in the 10-part series of “Great Practices for Nonprofits is “Great Financial Management.” It reviews the basics that every nonprofit board member – not just the treasurer – should know about basic practices, as all board members are responsible for the financial health of their nonprofit.

What do federal and state law mandate of all board members?  How can you be smart about reading financial statements?  What does a balance sheet actually tell you?  The workshop will be presented by Cathryn Saylor Peterson, Vice-President of Maxfield Peterson P.C., Accountants & Advisors, of Montrose.

The workshop will be presented three times. Nearest to Telluride is the workshop in Montrose on Monday, January 12, 1– 4 p.m., but if you can’t make that one, the talk will be repeated in Grand Junction on January 13 and in Gunnison on January 15. Cost is $30 per person. Registration information will follow soon; this series is sponsored by Western Slope Rural Philanthropy Days

3)  SAVE THE DATE FOR TELLURIDE GIVES – 12/13/14. (Yes, it’s a Saturday, but Giving will start Friday, 12/12/14 at noon and go until midnight on Saturday.)  Details about registration will be sent out next week. Telluride Gives is a one day local website-based promotion to give to community nonprofits.

Participants can park at the Carhenge Public Parking Lot or at Shandoka, and walk to the base of Lift 7, if facing ski lift, club house is in building to the right.
