Second Chance: Homes for the Holidays?

Second Chance: Homes for the Holidays?

G’day mate! I’m Comet and I’m an Australian cattle dog or, as many people around here call us, a Blue Heeler. I’m six months young and although petite for a typical blue heeler, what I lack in size I more than make up for in spunk and personality. I am hoping Santa Paws shows up soon so my friend Nikki (below) and I can be in new homes for the Holidays…

The following gives you more reasons to adopt us…

I love going for walks and would make a great running or hiking buddy. I also really enjoy chilling out with people or other dogs.  An interesting fact about my heritage is that cattle dogs like me were originally bred from a combination of Australian Dingo, Border Collie, Dalmatian and Australian Kelpies. I would say that makes me quite the exotic mix, a Dingcolmationelpie?!

It also makes us Heelers enthusiastic, intelligent, and very trainable with lots of stamina.

Of course I could pass as a herding dog but let there be no mistake, I am not an outside only working dog. I have asked Santa for a comfy home with a great yard and soft warm bed right next to my new family’s bed.

The other thing about me you should be aware of is that we Heelers are also known for being great at obedience and agility trials, tracking and lots of other jobs given the right training and practice. I do have ambitions to feel of use – but most importantly I want to feel loved…

And now I have been asked to introduce one of the very nice kitties living here at the Shelter.

Nikki

Nikki is a beautiful big curvy girl with the striking color variations of a torbie, with a coat of a grey tabby mixed with patches of orange and white tabby. She was found as a stray and was missing part of a back foot but gets around just fine, although now she prefers to be an inside cat.

Nikki is a confident girl who loves people and exploring and does well with cats and dogs that leave her alone. She is a cool cat as far as cats go – she doesn’t let her injury slow her down, nor has she become all whiny and pessimistic about her life. She definitely deserves her second chance.

Come visit us and our other friends here at Second Chance and maybe you will find a new best friend for the holidays!

Editor’s note: It’s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Well, pet heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue. Second Chance is the region’s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals’ lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. In her weekly blog, executive director Kelly Goodin profiles at least one, generally two of the many animals now living at the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving permanent homes. The column is sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer, partnering with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.

By the by, there is no better place to park your pup than Cottonwood whenever you head out of town (for locals) or are heading to town and staying somewhere that does not allow pets. Consider joining Ted’s Very Important Dog (VID) Club for added benies. (Details on Ted’s website.)

Second Chance Humane Society Animal Resource Center and Thrift Shop are both located in Ridgway, but service San Miguel, Ouray & Montrose Counties. Call the SCHS Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet, learn about adopting a homeless pet, or about the SCHS Spay/Neuter, Volunteer, Feral Cat, or other Programs.
