Back in the early 90’s when I was a girl of 12, I had a school friend whose Mum just radiated a healthy, natural beauty. She didn’t wear make up or fancy clothes. She just glowed. Ironically, that same lady nearly died a few years before of a mystery illness that stumped all her doctors. But she credited her eventual recovery to yoga and meditation. Hearing this story in 2014, most people would not bat an eye. But 20 years ago, yoga was for hippies only. A full practice was something quite strange that involved chanting and odd pretzel-like movements. Today, the health benefits of yoga, for mind and body, are deeply and widely documented. Yoga slows the aging process by gradually improving key factors in your physical health. Here are five reasons why you should consider not only practicing yoga now, but continuing your practice as you age for optimal health.

1. Balance

Remember the old adage, “If you don’t use it you’ll lose it”? Balance is a component of many yoga poses, think Warrior, Triangle and of course, Tree Pose. The ability to balance involves both our body and our brain; when not practiced one or both faculties will begin to diminish.
