Telluride Choral Society: SpringSing is Broadway Bound

What do macaroni and cheese and Broadway show tunes have in common?  For many of us, they strike an old-fashioned, cultural chord deep in our memory. What could be more “American” than mac-n-cheese and Gershwin, or Rodgers and Hammerstein?

On Friday night, March 20, beginning at 6:30 p.m., the Telluride Choral Society presents its 21st SpringSing concert—this year, paired with a fundraising (or fun-raising) dinner at the Elks Lodge. Artistic Director, Rhonda Muckerman, chose the all-Broadway program as simply a change of pace over the slightly more classical SpringSing programs of past years.

“Even if we have never been to these specific shows on Broadway, somehow as Americans we all know these tunes. They are a part of our heritage,” said Muckerman.

The program includes hits such as “Fascinating Rhythm” by George Gershwin, “And All That Jazz” from Chicago, “Seasons of Love” from Rent, “One Hand, One Heart” and “Somewhere” from West Side Story. Over 40 local singers will be showcased in the TCS Chorale and Chamber Singers; the TCS Choristers will even make a cameo appearance, singing songs from “The Sound of Music.”  The Renaissance Singers and the Jewel Tones, as well as a duet (“Bosom Buddies” from Mame) sung by sisters Megan and Colleen Mahoney will round out the program. along with TCS accompanists Bobbie Shaffer and Susan Ensor.

Dinner features macaroni and cheese, donated by our favorite local restaurants, including La Cocina de Luz, Floradora, Oak, Baked in Telluride, the Chophouse, and Clark’s Market, as well as salad, and desserts by Telluride Truffle. Why macaroni and cheese?

“Board member Cindy Wyszynski came up with the idea. It was so well received by everyone we spoke to we decided to just go with it. Who doesn’t like macaroni and cheese?,” explained Muckerman.

Tickets for the TCS “Broadway Bound” event can only be purchased on a “first-come/first-served” basis at the door on Friday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge.

Adult tickets are $30 and child tickets are $15.
