Sunday at the Palm: Sound of Music

The Telluride Film Festival’s Sunday at the Palm series is pleased to present classic, five-time Oscar winner (including Best Director and Best Director), THE SOUND OF MUSIC, on the big screen. “It’s like a breath of fresh air every time you see it,” said actress Julie Andrews of the film.

This American musical featuring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer is about a spirited young woman who leaves the convent to bring love and music to the home of Captain von Trapp and his seven children. Upon release, it became the highest-grossing film of all time.

The film is based on the real-life von Trapp family who escaped Nazi-occupied Europe and fled to the United States where they initially made a living as traveling musicians. The real Maria describes the true story (which differs from the film), about how she became a part of the von Trapp family:

“I really and truly was not in love. I liked Georg, but didn’t love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children. By and by I learned to love him more than I have ever loved before or after.”

Julie Andrews (Maria) and Christopher Plummer (Georg) had a chemistry that sparkled in the film as well as in real life. In a recent Diane Sawyer interview with Plummer, he said, “(We) should have ended up together. We should have had a huge, smashing affair.” But instead the two became the best of friends and still are, to this day.
