Sheridan Arts Foundation: Joe, A Tribute to Joe Cocker

Sheridan Arts Foundation: Joe, A Tribute to Joe Cocker

We remember it well. Telluride Inside… and Out was a young pup, just about one year old in 2009, when Steve Gumble brought Joe Cocker to town to be the closer on opening day (September 18, 2009) of the 16th annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival.

Here is a link to that story, including that video interview with the former super star, a  music industry legend, who once lived down the road a piece in Crawford, Colorado. The story is entitled ”Up Where He Belongs,” ironically, sadly all too true.

However….

On Friday, July 3, Telluride’s Sheridan Arts Foundation honors his memory with “Joe, a Tribute to Joe Cocker.” Doors open at 8:30 p.m.; show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets here are now $25 general admission floor; $35 reserved seats on the balcony. (The price will increase by $5 day of the show.)

According to the Sheridan Arts Foundation/ Opera House marketing director, Kathrine Warren, Joe, A Tribute to Joe Cocker is a labor of love that springs from a deep and abiding admiration for the iconic entertainer.

Joe Cocker was one of rock and roll’s enduring performers with his gutsy, gravelly vocal and unique stage presence that made him not only one of the most dynamic singers in the music industry, but also one of the most distinctive voices in the history of rock and roll.

Conceived by Chris Benjey, the Joe Band brings together a talented cast of Detroit and Ann Arbor musicians dedicated to one thing: paying homage to a performer who through influence and inspiration had a profound effect on the musical lives of the Boomer generation, with a sound that still resonates.

At the heart of the band’s mission is a commitment to accurately represent one of the most well-respected interpreters of classic soul records, big power ballads, and high-energy tracks of a generation.

The idea is, yes, to recapture the sound of Joe’s bands, but at least as important, bring the frenetic spirit of his live performances like Woodstock (and Telluride Blues & Brews) to old and new fans of an enduring talent.

Watch this tribute to the memory of Joe Cocker.
