Ah Haa: Wonderful Wizard of “Ah”z Annual Auction

Ah Haa: Wonderful Wizard of “Ah”z Annual Auction

You’re not in Kansas anymore!

Nope, and the wonderful world of Oz has had a temporary address change.

On Friday, July 17, 6 – 10 p.m., follow the yellow brick road to the Ah Haa School for the Art’s 23rd annual auction, where Dorothy and friends will be celebrating the “Wizard of Ah’z.”

Ah Haa’s auction is one of Telluride’s must-attend events of the summer, when everyone in the community turns out to support the school by bidding in the live and silent auctions on works created by artists near and far. Dress up as your favorite “Wizard of Oz” character and join the fun at the historic Depot building, 300 S. Townsend.

Doors for the auction open at 6 p.m. for the silent auction. There is also a cash bars and passed hors d’oeuvres. The live auction takes place under the large tent starting at 7:30. Among this year’s hot items are a uniquely decorated Gem 4-door Electric Car and a one-of-a-kind Miró-inspired, hand-painted vintage 1963 Scotty Camper. There is a trip “somewhere over the rainbow” with San Juan Balloon Adventures. That package also comes with two Go Pro cameras.

Part-time Telluride resident Jewel is the featured guest at the 2015 auction. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter has generously donated a one-of-a kind airy, intricate Kimono drawing, which adorns a pair of environmentally friendly Stalk-It (think corn stalks) skis. Jewel ’s gift to Ah Haa also include an autographed Taylor Guitar. Both are available for purchase at the live auction.

Through its many classes, workshops, summer programs and exhibitions, Ah Haa is the catalyst for creative engagement and collaboration in the Telluride region and beyond. At Ah Haa, everyone is celebrated as an artist, regardless of skill or experience. Understanding that art is both  process and product makes Ah Haa a supportive, welcoming, and exciting environment for artists of every stripe, where everyone is invited to explore, express, and evolve.

The huge array of great artwork donated to the auction, plus services and excursions offered up by businesses and supporters of the school – particularly title sponsors Alpine Bank and Tommy Hein Architects – proves that Ah Haa is truly the heart and soul of creative exploration in Telluride.

Yet tuition income covers less than half of the school’s operating expenses.

The annual auction is not just a great party. Funds raised at the event enable Ah Haa to continue to offer creative arts programs for children and adults, including classes, workshops, open studios, lectures, exhibitions and free special events that makes art available to everyone.

To enhance the vitality of the Telluride community, Ah Haa partners with local programs such as One to One mentoring, and hosting community events such as the BRAvo Fashion Show Fundraiser for the San Miguel Resource Center.

Supporting Ah Haa supports the vitality of the Telluride community as a whole.

Tickets for Ah Haa’s auction are $35 online or at the door for general admission; $100 for reserved VIP seating.
