Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul and Mary fame gives his second annual holiday concert in support of the Telluride Academy’s Mudd Butts International. Just for kids between the ages of 3-8 years old, the hour-long program is a fundraiser designed to help Academy students hoping to go to Indonesia in April to do interactive theater with kids in a small village on the island of Bali.

Peter Yarrow has been a part-time resident of Telluride for almost 40 years, living in the same Ski Ranch home. He first came to town in 1977 to sing at the Trinity Tavern at the behest of local Jack Zoller and, well, you know how the story goes: he’s been coming (and singing here) ever since.

A few years after arriving on the scene, Peter connected with another civil rights/human rights veteran, Wendy Brooks, in the early days of the Telluride Academy, which she founded as a single mom in her own backyard in the early 1980s. Best friends ever since, over the years Peter has generously offered his time and talents to the Academy’s international programs and helped Wendy out with her 9/11 initiative in support of survivors.

Peter was with the MBI staff and kids when they visited the King’s Academy in Amman Jordan and on their trip to Hue, Viet Nam. He also hosted seminars and sing-alongs when international delegations of young people came to Telluride to visit their Mudd Butts colleagues through a program called Global Mountain Theater.

The Telluride Academy has offered international theater programs, known locally as MBI or Mudd Butts International, since 1993. This coming year, 2016, marks the 21st time Mudd Butts founders and directors Sally Davis, Kim Epifano, Mike Stasiuk, and Brooks ( joined for the first time by Luke Brown and Ashley Smith) will be venturing out to a small village in a remote address on our Big Blue Marble to share music, dance, and theater with local kids and teachers. While there, Academy students live with local families and spend four hours each day in interactive, bi-lingual theater classes.

To date, Mudd Butts International has visited five continents, exposing young people to places like Guatemala, Brazil, New Zealand, Slovakia, Ireland, Turkey, Ethiopia, Viet Nam, India and Chile. This year, the program returns to a small rice paddie village in the northeastern mountains of Bali, a place MBI first visited in 2000. None of the kids going on the 2016 trip were alive back then, but five were born and raised in Telluride – and at the Academy. Perhaps you know Ambra Jacobson, Raven Hopgood, Julien Brooks, Sophia Watkins, or Zelly Winter?

And perhaps you will join them in support.
