Telluride’s Sheridan Arts Foundation presents two nights of Nahko & Medicine for the People: Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016 live in concert at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, Colorado. Both nights, they will be joined by Paul Cannon for opening support. Nahko, an Oregon-native born a mix of Puerto Rican, Native American, and Filipino, considers himself a citizen in service to the planet.
Disillusioned by the world around him and inspired by vagabond Americana musicians and storytellers like Connor Oberst and Bob Dylan, Nahko left home as a teenager in search of adventure and self-discovery.
Armed with stories, a guitar and a fierce set of ideals, he set out to bridge the cultural gaps dividing his own psyche. He began producing a public, musical journal of his journey toward personal, spiritual and social healing, and thus Medicine for the People was born. Nahko describes his music as a mix of hip-hop and folk rock with a world message.
Nahko has toured with such acts as Michael Franti, Xavier Rudd, and Trevor Hall. His most recent album, Dark as Night released last year, blasted through the charts, debuting as the No. 6 Top Heat Seeker/New Artist Album; No. 4 Top Alternative New Artist Album.
Nahko and Medicine for the People strive to create and perform a sound completely their own and with an underlying theme of social and political change woven throughout. The music has been described as “beautiful and stirring,” drawing comparisons to Bob Marley and proclaiming Nahko a “musical prophet.”
The first album with Nahko and Medicine for the People, On The Verge, came out in 2010, reflecting this exploration. The group’s second album, Dark As Night, followed in the spring of 2013, furthering expanding on Nahko’s evolving ideas about self-discovery and acceptance.
Bridging the music and activism worlds, Nahko has promoted and raised awareness for organizations that range from climate change awareness (350.org) to a myriad of projects surrounding First Nation rights, energy policies, environmental and social justice, issues with elders such as Winona LaDuke (www.honorearth.org) and birthing clinics (Bumi Sehat, Bali) to teaching cultural respect and accountability through music at schools all over the world.
Promoting peace, harmony, social justice, and the re-indigenization of Native youth in America, Paul Cannon is a Native American singe- songwriter from the San Pasqual Indian Reservation in San Diego, California.
Paul has dedicated his career to giving back not only to his native community and surrounding reservations, but also to those looking to connect to something more than the social norm of today. He speaks of de-colonization and re-indigenization for one race, the human race.
Paul’s soulful groove combined with heartfelt lyrical content and vulnerable storytelling moves audiences to laugh, cry, dance and sing along. Writing songs of hope and transformation, his work encourages an uplifting human experience, while blending elements of folk, pop, Americana, and native chanting.
Paul Cannon has supported some of todays most influential forward thinking visionaries in the music industry, artists such as Xavier Rudd, Brett Dennen, Mike Love, Jason Mraz, and Matisyahu.
