Offloading stress.

Tools to aid in high-intensity training.

Helping athletes through injuries.

Coping with failure.

Finding your flow.

The list rolls on…

Last June, Dr. Haley Perlus was a top presenter at Becca Tudor’s 2nd annual Telluride WOW Festival. I attended her talks and became a believer. Since then, the sports psychologist has been blogging weekly on Telluride Inside… and Out on a wide range of topics (see above list), offering (mostly video) tips about ways to cope with “Your Inner Athlete.” (To view all the posts, go here and type “Inner Athlete” into search, little magnifying glass icon.)

Add to the list of her posts, “Fear of Not Measuring Up.”

Fear not. When Haley returns to the 3rd annual Telluride WOW Festival, she will dive deeper into the subject of things that go bump in our brain. That talk, “The Only Way to Really Conquer Your Fear” is the weekend closer, Sunday, June 12, 3:30 p.m.

Program description as follows:

Despite excellent training and nutrition, your fears can take over and sabotage your efforts to perform your best. Have you ever been concerned that you won’t be able to run up that hill? Have you been worried that you may get injured in your sport? Did you feel nervous about your first yoga class? Or, once you earned your spot on top of the podium, were you afraid that you may not ever make it there again? If not properly dealt with, your fears can cause you to lose conscious control of your actions, holding you back from truly realizing your full potential. Dr. Perlus is here to help you not just cope with your fears. but also take back control of your mind and body so that you can perform at your peak.

Did you know real food is more likely to promote health than hyper-processed food?

How about the fact that frequent nut consumption has been linked to reduced risk of major chronic diseases, including heart and blood pressure disorders, type 2 diabetes, and respiratory disorders (according to studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine)?

Did you know that added sugar – particularly table sugar, high fructose corn syrup and so-called healthy alternatives such as agave and reduced fruit juice and dozens others – is not the only villain in the picture? Despite the fact that for decades Americans have been told to eat less meat and fat, we actually consumed 67 percent more added fat, 39 percent more sugar and 41 percent more meat in 2000 than we had back in 1950 and 24.5 percent more calories than we had in 1970, according to the Agricultural Department.

Not enough fruits, veggies and nuts. Too much animal-based protein, processed foods, and simple sugar. Not too  surprisingly, many of us are fatter and unhealthier. Or even in our health-centric Shangri-La, just not as slim and buff as we might want to be.

And the thing is, it appears your self-control around food is right up there with your ability to speak fluent Mandarin.

Saturday, June 11, 3:30 p.m., Dr. Haley Perlus explores “The Psychology Behind Good Nutrition,” which she  claims is similar to the psychology behind sport performance. Attendees can expect to discover unique mental toughness tools everyone can implement immediately and apply in their ongoing nutrition and fitness programs at home.

Program description as follows:

The truth is it doesn’t matter which nutrition plan you choose if don’t have the mind control to stick to it in the first place. Dr. Haley Perlus is here to present specific mindset strategies to maximize your cognitive and behavioral functions so that you can consistently follow through on good nutrition. You may have specific goals, but have no idea how to achieve them. You may have a solid plan, but feel stuck along the way. You may simply want a few tips and tools to stay positive and focused on your nutrition program. Whatever it is, at the end of Dr. Perlus’ presentation, you’ll have specific calls-to-action you can implement immediately to get results.

“We will specifically discuss top mindset techniques professional athletes use to achieve high performance and apply them to enhance the performance of WOW participants.”
