Down Valley Art Show 5/19 & 20

Down Valley Art Show 5/19 & 20

This is a whole new spin on “Leave It To Beaver.”

Last week or so I received the following email from former Colorado Teacher of the Year Seth Berg: “Come see my husband’s new jewelry. He’s been working like mad for months on this show. Please join us.”

The husband in question is, of course, the one and only Christopher Beaver, a renowned shaman and talented jewelry designer.

Making things more beautiful in people’s lives and making beautiful things, his bling. Not bad gigs.

Christopher Beaver of Moon Bear Jewels has lived in Telluride since 1993. His work, now carried at Wizard in Telluride and the Heritage Shop in Mountain Village, grows more popular ever year.

Christopher is one of several beloved featured artists in the upcoming Down Valley Art Show, which also includes new landscape paintings by Lauren Metzger; new art work by Rebecca Messier of Bliss and Bang Bang; and new poetry and weaving by Gin Eborn. The happening takes place Thursday and Friday, May 19 and May 20, 5:30 -8:30 p.m., 23 Red Cliff  Road, Placerville.

Christopher Beaver became intrigued by nature’s treasure at an early age: he always loved the color and shapes of stones. His work flowed from that passion.

Christopher traces his artistic roots back to his study of indigenous cultures. At first he expressed his admiration and connection through the medium of leather, fashioning a pair of pants with only a hole punch and a pair of dull scissors for tools. Next came one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry, sold all over Europe and in cities from Puerto Vallarta to Washington, D.C.– and in the Telluride region.

I adore adorning people. I love the moment a woman puts something on and feels like she is ready to go out and meet the world. There is nothing more satisfying than bringing out someone’s inner beauty. That is why I do what I do. In our everyday world, there is nothing more gratifying than helping make someone feel beautiful.

When crafting his pieces, Christopher claims a person he loves comes into mind and becomes his muse du jour:

Lucky for me, I have those people around me in spades. I am blessed with an absolute diversity of friends, loved ones, and a spiritual family. They are all somehow grafted into my process. They inspire me to create with a loving energy. My messy working table is my canvas: I sit there and imagine what this person would want to wear and why they would wear it. It is with that intention I sit and create.

Christopher has been working in this fashion for about 15 years.

I think of my art as a living testament to those amazing women who grant me the privilege of being their friend. For love, with love, and through love this work exists and I, for one, am very grateful.

For Christopher, The Down Valley Art Show, again May 19 and May 20, marks the debut of 800 new pieces designed this winter and spring. Following this event, the pieces are scheduled to tour in trunk shows around the country and Europe.
