Adam W. Carlos Fine Art, Mountain Village Core, Suite 102

Art Walk expands to Mountain Village this year with Adam W. Carlos Fine Art offering exclusive graphite pencil portraiture. Adam’s patience and attention to detail yields stunning images that capture the true character and personalities of his subjects. His painstaking dedication to accuracy makes Adam’s portraits, landscapes, and equestrian drawings stand out. His works become the centerpiece of a room without overpowering the space, rivaling the dramatic feel of an oil painting in formality but with the versatility to fit the décor of any room. The Portrait and Landscape Gallery is located in the Mountain Village core next to Reflection Plaza.

Ah Haa School for the Arts, 300 South Townsend

Ah Haa presents “The Museum of Feelings” an exhibition by school founder and book artist Daniel Tucker. The works in the show are all about the experience of how it feels and what it means to be a human being. Consequently, Tucker thinks that the mission of an artist, in any field, is to communicate both the human experience and its unlimited capacity in ways that are beautiful, touching, clear, responsible and sublime. The access code to Tucker’s paintings is to think of them as an invitation to come into his home. “I hope you find the furniture comfy, the symbols utilitarian and simple, the atmosphere exotic and full of wonder. I’ve included some maps in order that you may find your way.”

Alpine Wellness, 300 West Colorado, #2C

Alpine Wellness will be featuring a variety of art work from locally based artists. This month, they highlight the landscape photography of regional vistas taken by Robert Corkran, which pop off the colorful walls of the store.

Handcrafted local jewelry and glass decorate the interior of the store, along with psychedelic paintings by Elizabeth Baggett and landscape-inspired watercolors by Ophir’s own Heidi Sarazen.

A separate room hosts art from outside the box canyon with two installations: photographer, Sarah Schwab, will display powerful photographs of various U.S. National Parks; Taylor Clay will be exhibiting The Cultural Collidescope, mixed media representations of cultural challenges a small community in Sri Lanka faces.

Based on interviews with locals from Palagama, Sri Lanka, this exhibit is intended to create an honest dialogue and bring awareness to the changing relationship between generations, community interconnectedness, environmental stewardship, and cultural identity within a state of rapid globalization. Kick off your Art Walk at Alpine Wellness with a unique opportunity to engage with the artists and Happy Hour specials from 5 – 6:55 p.m..

Remnant aluminum sculpture

Gallery 81435 presents “Remnant Aluminum Sculpture,” a show by artist Steven Derks, a self-taught artist who works in metal. The exhibit is composed of Constructivist-inspired aluminum wall sculptures, which juxtapose the lyrical with the mechanical. Derks’ intention with this work is to make sculpture that represents fragments of industrial or mechanical apparatus.

“I’m interested in the post-industrial aesthetic and the tension between regular geometries and irregularit,” explained the artist.

Derks’ artwork is intended to suggest remnants of painted machines.

Steven Derks is a practicing full-time, self-taught artist, who focuses primarily on metal sculpture with an emphasis on as-is found object art. He is also a non-objective painter and photographer. Derks’ work can be found in numerous public, corporate, museum and private art collections both in the United States and abroad. His most notable showcases include a six-year exhibition in the Oval Office during the Clinton administration, and an ongoing residency exhibit at the University of Arizona Bio 2 in Oracle, AZ. He maintains a prolific studio practice and is influenced by such artists as Jim Dine and Sir Anthony Caro.

LDGiles Art & Design presents “An Eclectic Retrospective” A widely varying retrospective of Lawrence Giles’ work over the past several decades in a variety of media.

Madeline Hotel and Residences, 568 Mountain Village Blvd

The curated art featured at The Madeline strives to recapture the glory days of the past, including original paintings inspired by Colorado. In the early 1900’s, in order to paint subjects that moved them, many American artists became expatriates, saying good-bue to away the puritanical rules that dominated the American art scene. At that same time in our history, New York City editors began syndicating newspapers articles to Midwestern papers, far from the social restrictions of the Eastern elite. Writers were encouraged to go further and further West and write stories that would document their adventures and experiences – with the assurance their stories would be purchased and printed for a new, more accepting, Midwestern audience. Soon these stories motivated Americans to travel West, where artists found an growing and appreciative audience for their art. Inspired by new locations, subjects, and uncensored palettes, many stayed in Colorado or New Mexico and continued to paint for a new audience of collectors. The Western art scene was born and continues to thrive today.

This month MiXX will exhibit new work by one of their esteemed artists, Lisa Kairos, as well as the debut of a new artist to the MiXX collective, Katie Hefflefinger. Picaya, 101 West Colorado

This month, Picaya features Colleen Thompson, a Telluride local who creates jewelry best described as “earthy elements combined with funky style.” There is so much magic in the San Juan Mountains, which Colleen harnesses and turns into each handmade piece by using elements often found in the surrounding areas. Some of her favorite materials to use are crystals, recycled leather, sterling silver, feathers, fur, fools gold, and bullets shot by real Colorado cowboys. She hopes everyone carries a little piece of the San Juans with them wherever they go, and is happy to embody the whimsical into tangible and wearable art.

Stronghouse Studios + Gallery, 283 South Fir

A Heroine's Journey

The Stronghouse Studios + Gallery features artwork created by visiting artists from the Steeprock Artisans Guild.

Steeprock is comprised of four artist studios in an off-grid, solar, three-level building perched on a red-rock bluff above Sawpit, CO. Steeprock will be hosting California-based artists Dabbs Anderson, Joy Brenneman, and Lindsey Ross for a residency during the month of June.

Working in this wild and self-sustained environment, Anderson, Brenneman, and Ross will create work in their respective mediums around the general theme of the “Heroine’s Journey,” a narrative structure based on Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey.” The works in the show will cycle weekly, so be sure to come multiple times throughout June to see how these artists respond t, and are affected by the elements surrounding them.

Every Saturday during the residency Ross will be set up and available for portraits at the Stronghouse Studios Gallery from 11am-6pm.  Please contact her at lindseyrossphoto@gmail.com for appointment information.

Lindsey Ross is a fine art photographer who specializes in historical photographic processes. Since earning her MFA Photography from Brooks Institute in 2011, Ross has worked primarily in wet plate collodion process, making tintypes and ambrotypes for both fine art and portrait work. Wet plate collodion has become the ideal format for Ross, who seeks autonomy and at the same time a sense of connection. The slow pace of collodion requires a presence and intimacy that connects her to both the physical and spiritual world.

Joy Brenneman is an artist who works primarily in the medium of forged metal. After completing her BA Studio Art at Westmont College, Brenneman apprenticed for and was later hired at a local ornamental ironwork fabrication shop, where she was introduced to forging and became the head blacksmith’s assistant. She began designing her own pieces there, focusing on wood and metal furniture and other functional art.

Joy now works out of a shared shop space that is part of the California Blacksmith Association (CBA) creating commissioned pieces and brings to life her own designs. Current work focuses on interactive forged sculptures that emphasize the sacredness of natural objects and everyday life.

“The opportunity to fully immerse myself in my art for a month is indescribably exhilarating. Being able to do it in Telluride makes it almost unbelievable,” said Brenneman about the forthcoming residency.

Dabbs Anderson is a multi-disciplined narrative artist, who earned her BFA in printmaking at the University of Mississippi and has been living and working in Los Angeles, California for the past six years. Utilizing a strong imagination and story-telling skills, Anderson’s work weaves us into a world entirely her own. Her sculptural images, often in the form of puppets, explores themes of communication between the conscious and the unconscious mind; her drawing and paintings are a history of mark-making and illustration that unfold the secrets of a world hidden beyond the realm of reality.
The show runs until June 30, 2016 at the Stronghouse Gallery, located at 283 S Fir Street in Telluride, Colorado. Open daily from 12-6 p.m. or by appointment.
