Rock art styles are diverse across the Southwestern United States. Budding archaeologists will get a chance to explore, identify, and recreate a number of major trends during Pinhead Institute’s upcoming Punk Science program.

“Archaic hunter-gatherers (6,000 to 500 BC), Ancestral Pueblo farmers (500 BC to AD 1300), and more recent Athabascan and Uto-Aztecan groups all made different types of rock art we can identify stylistically in the Four Corners region,” said program presenter Kate Hughes, archaeology lab assistant at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in Cortez.

In keeping with the Punk Science program’s kid-friendly, interactive style, Hughes will incorporate a fun and creative opportunity for hands-on learning into the program. Children will receive materials and instruction about how to create their own works of art using techniques similar to those of the ancients.

“We’ll explore Southwestern rock art through time and space, and students will learn how rock art was made,” Hughes said.

Punk Science: Southwestern Rock Art” is the third installment of Pinhead Institute’s annual six-week, kid-centric summer learning series. In it, leading Ph.D. scientists and other STEM experts present science outside the school setting in order to engage and excite kids in the wonders of STEM learning.

Upcoming topics include: Permafrost and Climate Change (July 19), Bear Science (July 26), and Data Analytics (Aug. 2).
