Second Chance: Home for the Holidays

Second Chance: Home for the Holidays

My greatest wish this holiday season is to find a home. I seek your support in creating a holiday miracle.

I have been waiting for a home for over 2.5 years. Yeah, that’s right – I have been here at the Second Chance Shelter for 2.5 years watching all the other kitties get homes and wondering when it will be my turn. Well, let’s make it my turn – it would be a great gift not only to me, but also to all my Second Chance staff and volunteers. They are cheering for me to find my home before 2016 comes to an end.

Kodiac

Kodiac

My name is Kodiac. I am ordinary on the outside but extraordinary on the inside. I am independent, so families looking for a cuddly lap cat do tend to look the other way – but I really do deserve this chance. I want to be someone’s cat – even if I don’t show it.

If I have not yet been convincing enough, here are two more reasons why I need to be adopted before 2017.  Reason #1: I am a senior (see last month’s Pet Column on the benefits of adopting a senior pet) and, at 11 years of age, I can’t waste any more time waiting for my new family. Reason #2: This is not my first time being homeless. It is at least my third time. And each time I have become homeless it has not been my fault, but human circumstance. These repeated disappointments have led me to be less enthusiastic than other cats when I greet potential adopters. But I really do want a home and family of my own.

So if you can’t give me a home – please consider helping me to find one. Facebook me, sponsor me, tweet me, help get the word out. I need this holiday miracle.

To help make this miracle happen Second Chance is offering a Home for the Holidays Promotion on all adoptions from now until 12/31. Not only do adopters get an awesome holiday gift bag filled with treats and toys and collars and leashes ($50 value), but also adoption fees on seniors and “long-termers” like me are greatly reduced.

Speaking of other “long-timers”…let me close by introducing a few of my friends here at Second Chance who need miracles of their own:

Kit Kat (a full-figured gal, only five years old and very low maintenance) has been waiting for her new family for 1.5 years.

Peter, at only 1.5 years old, has spent the last year waiting for his new family…Not sure why because he is a cool dude.

Angelica arrived as a kitten in May 2015. She has maintained her upbeat temperament and playfulness while waiting patiently for her forever home.

And Arvin has been waiting just over a year for his new home. He is only three years old, but is very stressed in the shelter which makes it hard for him to connect with adopters – but he would do great once he was in a home of his own.

I hope you will consider helping us less fortunate felines out. Most of all we just want to fulfill our purpose, to love and be loved… As I sit here and think that every day more spent at the shelter is one day less spent with my true family…

Editor’s note: It’s no secret. The Telluride region is dog heaven. Well, pet heaven. Unless you are one of our furry friends who gets caught in the maw of neglect and abuse. Then heaven is on hold until Second Chance Humane Society comes to the rescue. Second Chance is the region’s nonprofit dedicated to saving animals’ lives and promoting responsible pet parenting and human-animal bond. In her weekly blog, executive director Kelly Goodin profiles at least one, generally two of the many animals now living at the no-kill shelter, Angel Ridge Shelter, a dog and a cat, hoping to find them loving permanent homes. The column is sponsored by Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch & Kennel, who from time to time exercises his skills as a dog whisperer, partnering with Kelly and her staff to help train a particularly challenging animal.

By the by, there is no better place to park your pup or get your pup (or adult dog) trained than Cottonwood whenever you head out of town (for locals) or are heading to town and staying somewhere that does not allow pets. Consider joining Ted’s Very Important Dog (VID) Club for added benies. (Details on Ted’s website.)

Second Chance Humane Society Animal Resource Center and Thrift Shop are both located in Ridgway, but service San Miguel, Ouray & Montrose Counties. Call the SCHS Helpline at 626-2273 to report a lost pet, learn about adopting a homeless pet, or about the SCHS Spay/Neuter, Volunteer, Feral Cat, or other Programs. Vetting the Vet: Dr. Michelle Dally, DVM, J.D. is Medical Director of Second Chance Humane Society. She also has a private practice, Dally Veterinary Medicine, 333 S. Elizabeth Street, Ridgway, Colorado. Her service area is  San Miguel Mesas, Placerville, Ridgway, Ouray, and Montrose. For more on Dr. Dally, go here.
