Telluride veteran and Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist Anders Osborne returns for an encore after his last celebrated appearance in September 2016 at Telluride Blues & Brews. He performs in an acoustic show with another Telluride favorite son, Jackie Greene on Friday, January 13, at Club Red in the Telluride Conference Center, Mountain Village.

As Telluride locals know, live, Anders is a consummate showman, a force of nature. In wildly energetic physical performances, he is known to rip notes out of his guitar like a hungry animal on a carcass, forcing out riveting steel-on-steel slide solos and creating fireworks like Neil Young and Crazy Horse on their best hair nights. And when the man sings, it is from the inner reaches of his soul, revealing the spaces between the lines of his richly detailed songwriting about hopes, dreams, and failings.

In other words when Anders lets all hell breaks loose, it’s heaven on earth.

And then last March, Anders released Spacedust & Ocean Views, his first indie recording after leaving the Alligator label and a clear sonic break from his signature no-holds-barred persona. Gone were the growling guitars raves, replaced by an introspective, bittersweet vibe.

Spacedust was much more downtempo, much more in a standard R & B vein.

Anders seemed to have switched his muses.

Then in March 2016, he put out Flower Box.

“I love the way this record comes out stout and determined right out the gate, a four-piece rock & roll band making beautiful and conquering noise,” said Osborne. “The producer, Mark Howard, has a way of making you play in the moment and being confident. His sounds and engineering style is that of classic records, with his own special sauce of ‘haunting’ on top of it. The musicians on the release are undoubtedly some of my absolute favorites in the world, as players and as people. Their contributions are invaluable. I am talking about Scott Metzger, Brady Blade, Carl Dufrene, Chad Cromwell, Marc Broussard, David LaBruyere, Rob McNelley & Justin Tocket. Bad boys! I’ve been wanting to make this record for several years and I am stoked it’s finally here.

“Anders Osborne unexpectedly released a stellar new album, Flower Box, and listening to it is like finding money… you didn’t know it was coming, but your world is a happier place for its arrival. Dripping in southern blues and fuzz box guitars, Osborne and his band hit all the right notes…,” raved liveforlivemusic.com

In October 2011, Anders performed in Telluride was KOTO’s Halloween Bash, joining yet another Telluride regular, Karl Denson (of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, KDTU). At that very special concert, Karl and Anders on lead vocals, along with their guests, performed the Rolling Stones’ landmark album, Sticky Fingers, from start to finish, including chestnuts such as “Wild Horses” and “Brown Sugar.”

“Anders is an amazing all-around talent,” said Denson at the time. He’s someone I’ve admired for years…”

And now, a whole other thing, an acoustic show.

More about Anders Osborne:

At age seven, Anders Osborne and his family moved from Uddevalla, Sweden, to Island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, a place known for its artist-friendly atmosphere, ancient architecture, and serene landscape, made famous by resident and famed movie director Ingmar Bergman.

Ander’s father, a professional drummer who toured northern Europe with various jazz and popular rock bands throughout the 1960s, would bring home early reel-to-reel bootleg recordings of  his contemporaries, among them, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, “Cannonball” Adderley, John Coltrane, and Charlie Parker.

Listening to all of that music paved the way for Anders, an aspiring young artist. He began his career playing drums, piano, guitar, and singing in local groups, performing his own compositions, as well as songs by singer-songwriters of the time, including Van Morrison, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan.

Anders left home at the age of 16 to begin a musical odyssey that eventually landed him in The Big Easy in 1985. There he developed a deep understanding of  blues, rock, and New Orleans funk. From his adopted hometown, he produced hits for the likes of Keb’ Mo and Tim McGraw and released his first album in 1989.

Though based in New Orleans, Anders has garnered fans all over the globe, from touring non-stop, as well as through a heralded collaboration with the North Mississippi All-Stars.

A very proud immigrant, Anders has often said he is living in the Promised Land.

About Jackie Greene:

jackie-greene-600x374

In this acoustic pairing with Anders Osborne, Jackie Greene is sure to charm with the honesty of his compelling voice, vivid songwriting skills, and instinctive mastery of several instruments. His style is charged and timeless, drawing inspiration from American roots and collaborations with greats such as the Black Crowes, Phil Lesh, B.B. King, and others.

At the age of 11 or 12. Jackie discovered Nirvana’s Nevermind, a grunge rock standard and clicked into its attitude instantly. How lucky to have acquired his first electric guitar, a cheap Strat, at about the same time.

Bluesman Ray Charles was also one of Jackie Greene’s earliest influences. He discovered his records at age 14 in the basement of his childhood home in Cameron Park, California, a small town 30 miles east of the state capitol of Sacramento. The young man had never heard blues, soul, and R & B, much less on vinyl.

By high school, Jackie was a blues, country and old rock freak, who had worked his way backward from Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones to Muddy Waters and Hank Williams, Sr. Other influences include Jeff Tweedy, Merle Haggard, The Replacements and The Pixies, and especially Tom Waits, whose Small Change is purportedly Greene’s #1 favorite record. While Waits’ growling vocals did not appeal at first, Jackie’s admiration ultimately became devout. Waits helped Jackie understand what top-notch songwriting is all about.

Yes, Jackie’s influences are a mixed bag, a fact which has shown up time and again in his work over the years.

Sightings of  Jackie Greene, a musical chameleon and multi-instrumentalist – voice, guitars, dobro, piano, harmonica, and percussion – in Telluride began in 2005, when he first performed at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Jackie appeared at Telluride Blues & Brews in 2009 and at the Telluride Wine Festival (Denise Mongan of Club Red booked that one too) and the historic Sheridan Opera House in 2010.

He returned to play Club Red in March 2012, so this acoustic show with Anders could be considered an encore. At the time, Jackie was touring with his seventh album, Back to Birth, which showcases the multitalented artist’s uncanny knack for synthesizing his deep affinity for American roots styles into a timeless, personally-charged sound.

In 2013, Jackie joined the reunited Black Crowes as lead guitarist on their worldwide tour. The following year, he released the self-titled debut album of supergroup Trigger Hippy. (He is a member along with Joan Osborne and Crowes drummer Steve Gorman.)

Jackie continues to be a frequent member of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh’s touring ensemble Phil Lesh & Friends, for which he has contributed lead guitar and vocals since 2007. He also toured as part of WRG, an acoustic trio with the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson and performed with Levon Helm as part of Helm’s fabled Midnight Ramble shows.

The musical passion and creative integrity that drive Back to Birth have been constants in Jackie Greene’s musical life from the start, that cache in his parents’ basement.

“The musicians that I really admire and try to emulate are the ones who have the whole package: they’re great songwriters, great singers and great instrumentalists, and they have a vibe about them that’s real,” he states, adding, “When I go to make a record, I’m not thinking about where I can fit in a bunch of guitar solos. I’m thinking, ‘What does this song feel like? What’s it saying?’ So my goal, when writing a song or making a record, is to find the core of that emotional experience and convey that.”

And what better way to realize that goal than to perform naked (low to no production) in an acoustic show, trading songs with Anders Osborne?

Upcoming at Club Red: Devendra Banhart, Saturday, February 4.

The music of this Venezuelan-American singer-songwriter and visual artist has been described variously as “psychedelic folk” and “New Weird America.” Specifically, SPIN magazine once said Banhart offers “ashram-appropriate guitar strums and trippy-hippie tone poetry.

Seeing – or hearing – is believing.

Devendra is touring with songs from his ninth album, Ape in Pink Marble, which features the performer’s signature whispered lyrics and gentle keyboard. His is music made for the laid-back, lounge ambiance of Club Red.
