Telluride Yoga Feat: Tommy Rosen, Healing & Insight

This year’s Telluride Yoga Fest includes a list of top-tier presenters, hikes, SUP, inspirational talks, music, and more. Tickets/passes to the Telluride Yoga Festival here.

“Yoga begins with the body, but once we get free, it is all about the creative expression and vital energy we give back out to the world,” Tommy Rosen (in a recent interview from India).

Please scroll down to the bottom of the story to listen to a podcast featuring Tommy Rosen, presenting at Yoga Fest for the first time.

We have all heard the claims.

It can make your skin look less wrinkly.

It banishes back pain.

Cures asthma too.

The evidence now on table suggests all of the above is true: the ancient practice of yoga can indeed help promote general health by, yes, reducing back pain, etc., but also by aiding in a more restful sleep; mitigating the risk factors – such as stress – of cardiovascular disease; helping to lose weight; strengthening muscles and bones; strengthening the lymphatic system; enhancing proprioception (the ability to feel where you body is in space); improving immune function overall.

The list keeps going and growing…

According to Patanajali’s Sutras, yoga also helps quell the fluctuations of the mind, in other words, slows down the mental loops of frustration, regret, anger, fear, and desire, all of which can lead to stress.

Which in turn can lead to all sorts of unhealthy escapes like drugs and alcohol.

If your medicine cabinet looks like a pharmacy – the epidemic of prescription drug addiction in our country is making national headlines – perhaps it’s time to try yoga.

Or deepen your existing practice.

Yoga and meditation build awareness. And the more aware we are, the easier it is to break free of destructive emotions and behaviors.

Just ask Tommy Rosen, who embodies one particular definition of yoga: “A movement from one point to another, high one.” (Desikachar in “The Heart of Yoga.”)

And who believes the ancient art and science of yoga is perfect for healing many of the challenges of our modern age.

Tommy – along with Tias LIttle, Amy Ippoliti, Gina Caputo. Mark Whitwell, Coby Kozlowski, Beryl Bender Birch, and his wife Kia Miller – is among the top-tier presenters at the upcoming 10th annual Telluride Yoga Festival.

And Tommy Rosen ought to know. He is a former addict (since the age of 13), yoga teacher and addiction recovery expert, who has spent the last two decades (since 1991, when he kicked his habit) immersed in the disciplines of yoga, recovery, and wellness.

Tommy and his wife, yoga teacher Kia Miller, live in Venice, California, where they teach  and grow organic vegetables in their backyard.

Tommy Rosen’s Yoga Fest classes are as follows:

Friday July 21, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: “Open Heart, Calm Mind, Creative Life”

The open heart of the yogi allows for the free flow of Universal Consciousness in the form of Prana. The ability to focus and project mentally permits the yogi to direct Prana as needed and to participate in this flow, leading to a fully creative life. Everybody wants access to this creative power. In this class, Vinyasa leads into Kundalini. Then, pranayama paves the road to chanting and meditation. Come and cultivate the innate creative force within you. All Levels.

Saturday, July 22, 8 – 10 p.m.: “The Sacred Union of Prana and Apana”

Combining the energies of Prana and Apana at the navel point (third chakra) stimulates the awakening of Kundalini energy within the body building great strength and expansion of awareness. Vinyasa flow will prepare us for the powerful Kundalini Kriya that awaits. Then a deep meditation will help us connect with our own expanding consciousness. All Levels.

Sunday, 1 – 3 p.m.: “The Extraordinary, Blissful, Eternal Now”

Many people are caught in a painful relationship with time. Life has piled up and they feel unable to get through it. The result is stress. One of the blessings of yoga is to re-establish present-time awareness and return us to a more balanced life. On this powerful journey, students will work with three distinct breath practices to bring us into Shuniya, or complete stillness. From there they will access and practice being in the Eternal Now. If stress and overwhelm have you in their grasp, this is the class for you. All Levels.

In addition, on Thursday, July 20, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Tommy Rosen and Kia Miller lead an all-day intensive: “Living the Vibration of Sat Nam.”

Tommy Rosen & Kia Miller, husband and wife and co-presenters at Yoga Fest intensive Thursday, July 20.

The mantra “Sat Nam” is a declaration of our consciousness, a secret formula for reaching an awareness of one’s Divine Nature. Once reached, there is no going back, rather there is a continuous unfolding of spontaneous creativity and presence.

Also on Friday at noon, Tommy Rosen is a featured speaker on a panel about “Vegetarianism and Political Activism.”
