A reading series brought to you by Telluride Theatre, THE PLAY’S THE THING, returns for the 2018 season. Bringing great dramatic literature to life with staged readings, THE PLAY’S THE THING is a fresh, fun way to experience theatre. A reading of “Rhinoceros” by Eugene Ionesco takes place Wednesday, January 31, 7 p.m. at Telluride Arts HQ, 135 West Pacific Avenue. THE PLAY’S THE THING is FREE and open to the public, however, donations are encouraged. Theatre lover? Literature hound? Join Telluride Theatre for a special play reading series featuring classic, modern and new scripts.

THE PLAY’S THE THING is part performance, part reading and part discussion. Think… book club for plays.  Think… dynamic performance meets great literature.

Four readings are planned for 2018, all FREE and open to the public. Prior to each reading, a script along with compiled history, background and playwright information will be made available for anyone who would like to do some reading before the performance. However, audience members are welcome to come cold and just enjoy hearing great plays performed by rehearsed actors. After each reading there will be an open discussion of the play. 

“We had this reading series a few years back and it was very successful. A great way for audiences to hear the beauty of these scripts without a full production. Reading plays for non-theatrical people can also be very challenging; they are written to be heard and this is the public’s chance to be exposed to incredible works of art. The readings also give our actors the chance to sink their teeth into great writing, drama and classic theatrical characters,” states Sasha Sullivan Telluride Theatre’s Artistic Director. 

She goes on to say, “If you are a lover of reading, writing, theatre, acting, this is an event for you. It is also a great way for people who would like to try to perform to dip their toes in. The rehearsal process is short and actors will gain great skills participating in these readings.”

 As for RHINOCEROS, Sasha has this to add: “In Ionesco’s absurdist masterpiece RHINOCEROS, the inhabitants of a small, provincial French town slowly start to turn into rhinoceroses. Bérenger, is the only one who doesn’t succumb to this mass metamorphosis, experiencing paranoia and obsession with the rhinoceroses. RHINOCEROS was written as a response and criticism to the sudden upsurge of Fascism and Nazism preceding World War II, and explores the themes of conformity, culture, fascism, responsibility, logic, mass movements, mob mentality, philosophy and morality.”

RHINOCEROS is truly a play for our current political times.
