Lo Moon

Lo Moon is an American indie rock band from Los Angeles, currently signed to Columbia Records. The band released its first single, “Loveless”, in September 2016. Its self-titled debut studio album was released this past February.

“Lo Moon just keep cropping up. They first piqued our interest back in September when they dropped their debut song ‘Loveless’—a glacially gorgeous cut of epic indie with a bunch of opening bars that’ll will make you quiver. Something in that beat, the shuffle and the finger click, the way the synths surge and then fall away to make way for the the singer’s tones that sound not unlike early Thom Yorke. It’s still the only track of theirs that exists online, and for a period of months there was a whole lotta nothing about them online. No deets about who was in the band or even where they were based. There was no video to study and dissect. But then they started playing live, small shows here and there, and they wound up opening for The Temper Trap, which resulted in the TT singer Dougy name-checking them as the new band he was most excited about. So we decided to stop in and see what was up. While ‘Loveless’ is the undoubted crown jewel in their set, the trio—made up of Matt Lowell, Crisanta Baker, and Sam Stewart (Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics son)—create music that’s expansive and cleanly crafted, an atmospheric peak, a melancholic trough. Every show they headline, they seem to sell out…,” wrote Noisey.

Prior to the band’s formation, its eventual lead singer, Matt Lowell, began writing songs in New York City with the idea of forming a band. He later moved to Los Angeles where he met bassist and keyboardist Crisanta Baker. Lowell played her a demo for the song, “Loveless” and soon after, Baker became the second member of the band

Guitarist, Samuel Stewart joined shortly after.

Lo Moon began practicing in Lowell’s backyard shed. The “Loveless” demo, which Lowell had begun writing in 2012, attracted the attention of Columbia Records and spurred the label to sign the group.

Sterling Laws later joined as Lo Moon’s touring drummer.

In September 2016, Lo Moon released “Loveless” as its first single, produced by former Death Cab for Cutie guitarist and producer, Chris Walla and François Tétaz.

After the song’s official release, the band played some live shows before going on tour in early 2017.

In May 2017, Lo Moon released a second single, “This Is It.”  In June, they performed at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City and, two months later, at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

In September 2017, Lo Moon was one of three acts added to NPR’s inaugural Slingshot Emerging Artists series.

When Lo Moon released their self-titled album, the song “This Is It” peaked at #6 on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart  and the band performed that rack (along with “Loveless”) on Jimmy Kimmel Live in January.

Lo Moon performs in Telluride for the very first time on August 17.
