Bioneers Into Action- Class October 10 & 11 at Library ahead of event
Bioneers – biological pioneers, innovators for the future, social justice for the present – they’re coming to Telluride next weekend, October 14-16, 2011! The Wilkinson Public Library is the only western slope venue for the Beaming Bioneers – a live satellite feed from the main stage of the Bioneers Conference held in Marin, California. We’re so fortunate to be able to be there - and here!
Speakers at Bioneers are never less than inspiring and often heartrending, awesome, even downright amazing. The depth and breadth of the offerings means there is a topic for everyone. It happens next weekend at the library, Friday through Sunday, from 10-2 each day. You can come and go as you need, but I don’t want to miss a thing. TIO will interview two of the speakers and you can check out that podcast later in the week to get a taste of the inspiration!
On Thursday, October 6, Telluride's Pinhead Institute hosts its first ever Science Soiree. The event takes place Thursday, October 6, 5:30 – 7 p.m. at The River Club. The on-going event is an opportunity to engage with scientists participating in the Scholars in the Schools program.
Scholars in the Schools is signature initiative of the Pinhead Institute.
Scholars in the School provides a rare opportunity for students from rural communities to interact with PhD scientists from around the world specializing in everything from nanoscience, to biochemistry, field biology, climatology, and much more. These highly acclaimed scientists lead labs, experiments, workshops, and field expeditions for students in grade school through high school in Nucla, Norwood, Telluride, Ridgway, and Ouray. In collaboration with teachers, these demonstrations and hands-on activities enhance the science curriculum, increase science awareness among students, stimulate scientific thinking and put a human face on the scientific community.

Connect the dots and what becomes apparent is a certain symmetry between the Telluride Film Festival and Telluride's five-star Wilkinson Public Library, whose upcoming Cinematheque – stay tuned for exact dates and films – is one of the most popular events of Telluride's fall/winter season.
Martin Scorsese's "Living in a Material World," about the life and times of Beatles "dark horse" George Harrison screened at the Film Festival over Labor Day weekend as did a Serge Bromberg's painstaking and beautiful restoration of George Melies's silent film masterpiece, "A Trip to the Moon," which Bromberg once described as "the 'Avatar' of its day. Scorsese's next big project and his first dive into a film for children is "Hugo," a project formerly known as "Hugo Cabret." (Apparently focus groups nixed the longer name).

Susan and I usually leave Telluride in early September for family visits. This year we started in New Jersey to be with Susan's parents for 1 1/2 weeks, then to Bellevue, Washington for time with Kid 1, Kimm Viebrock and family.
Our Fall visit in Bellevue often coincides with Grandson Matthew's birthday, at least sometime around the day. With our far-flung and busy family, it's rather amazing that over the years we have managed to maintain fairly regular in-person time together.
Still, it comes as a bit of a surprise to find Matthew all grown up. It seems like yesterday I held him in a brief reprieve from his isolette- he was a tiny preemie. And this year he started high school! Tonight we'll watch him playing trumpet in the Bellevue High School marching band at their home football game.

Ah Haa School for the Arts
Well, the leaves are turning and this is our last big weekend before town is quiet. But just because town is slowing down, doesn't mean the Ah Haa School is. Our new fall/winter catalog is online and at the printer. The catalog has a great line up of workshops and events for adults and kids and showcases the beautiful work of local artist, Judy Haas on the cover.
Don't forget that next month is The Art of Being A Woman Month where the Ah Haa School celebrates the female spirit in the arts. The school will once again host Lunafest, the national touring women’s short film festival, a handful of workshops and last year's every popular BRAvo Auction. Be a part of BRAvo this year and decorate a bra to help raise awareness about breast cancer. Bras will be available at the school starting next Friday the 23rd. Partial proceeds will benefit the San Miguel Resource Center.
