True film buffs may know all about the Labor Day Weekend Telluride Film Festival, anxiously awaiting the release of the full program, but many mainstream movie-goers may not realize how important Telluride is to the movie scene. With all the hype surrounding TIFF, often the real Magic 8 Ball is Telluride when it comes to predicting Oscars.
While the Toronto International Film Festival buzz starts to pick up mid-summer, the folks at Telluride Film Festival are quietly making their picks and vowing journalists to secrecy. The public doesn't know what will be shown at Telluride until Friday at noon, when the full program is released. And then something magical happens: the movies Telluride likes best usually are shown in Toronto a few days later to even more fanfare, and quite often are the films that do well when the Academy Awards roll around the following spring.
So - whether you're waiting on line to catch the first show of the afternoon, or whether you're watching TFF unfold in the cyberworld version of on-line; whether you're anxious to hear what everyone's talking about at Telluride Film Fest this year, or whether you just want to reminisce about last year's TFF, we have for you here a collection of some of our favorite write-ups of Telluride Film Festival.

Telluride Film Festival 2009
The work of putting on a film festival in Telluride starts long before Labor Day weekend. Where other journalists parachute in and out for the event, TIO is here year-round. For 2009 TFF, that meant an opportunity to interview renowned film critic, Howie Movshovitz, curator of the 2009 Telluride Film Festival kick-off event.
We obviously have a particular fondness for TFF but it's not just because we live here. Telluride gets a lot of attention for our ability to pick great films. Gary Meyer talks to Susan about what makes TFF so special and Clint calls attention to the TIO picks for possible Oscar attention based in part on Susan's earlier 2009 Telluride Film Festival recap.
As with any art, experiences with films are typically uniquely personal. In his piece about the the Anouk Aimee tribute, Clint describes how history momentarily repeated itself with one special film that has remained deeply intertwined with his own life.
Having built such great connections in the area over the course of many years, TIO regularly has private opportunities to speak one-on-one with industry insiders. One such conversation was with Hannah Rothschild talking about her documentary, The Jazz Baroness. Susan also had a unique opportunity to discuss with Sophia Tolstoy Penkrat the impromptu Tolstoy family reunion resulting from the world premiere of The Last Station in Telluride.

Telluride Film Festival 2008 Highlights
Short, to the point, yet accurate as all get-out. It was, after all, only our second TIO post and you have to start somewhere.
TFF 2008 Favorites - Before the rest of the world (including Toronto) began raving about Slumdog Millionaire, American Violet, or I've Loved You So Long, TIO was already singing their praises and comparing them to previous prescient Telluride favorites such as Breaking Away and Strictly Ballroom. All three TIO 2008 TFF favorites went mainstream and now everyone is looking for the next Slumdog.
Interviews with directors and actors are a perennial favorite for Telluride Film Festival attendees. Revanche writer/director Götz Spielmann did not disappoint and TIO was there.
