To Your Health: The Downlow on Summer Heat

Dr. Alan Safdi, a world-renowned internist and gastroenterologist with encyclopedic knowledge of mind-body wellness and preventative medicine, posts on Telluride Inside… and Out under the banner of “To Your Health.” His blogs feature the most current information in his field: health, wellness and longevity.

This fall, Dr. Alan returns with his popular Live Longer Retreat wellness intensives. For further information, email telluridecme@gmail.com. or go to Safdi’s Telluride Longevity Institute website.

This week, Dr. Alan takes a  hard look at summer heat and your health.

A massive heat wave is sweeping the US, with July being the hottest month on record ever.

On the East Coast, temperatures topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit; in the Midwest, temperatures climbed past 110 degrees. And so on.

That heat has been more than just uncomfortable. In some cases it has proven to be deadly.

The point is that when our bodies are exposed to extreme temperatures, we become more susceptible to exhaustion and heat stroke. There are also long-term consequences that can lead to disease. Did you know extreme heat makes us dumber? Or that heat causes air pollution and air quality to get worse, which makes it harder to breathe and leads to more disease. People have even gotten second degree burns from sidewalks.
